After a fair bit of reading and experimenting, I am stumped... mostly because I don't know what the error message I am getting really means. I've added some TTF fonts I need for a project I am working on. They work fine in all applications except The GIMP... which is where I need them. I did some reading, and the instuctions seem simple... put your TTFs in a convenient location (mine are in /usr/share/fonts/truetype) ttmkfdir > fonts.dir in your font directory. xset fp+ /usr/share/fonts/truetype xset fp rehash. When I do the xset fp+ /usr/share/fonts/truetype part I get an error: ------------------------------------------- X Error of failed request: 86 Major opcode of failed request: 51 (X_SetFontPath) Serial number of failed request: 8 Current serial number in output stream: 10 ------------------------------------------- OK, nice, but what does this mean? I know what the fp+ is supposed to do... it's supposed to append the new font path to current font path. I've checked and it is not appended... yet. As I said, I'm stumped here... suggestions? What desktop are you using? Gnome v1.4 or v2 or KDE?
Kind regards,

Would help to provide all the information, wouldn't it? SuSE8.1, and KDE3.1 C.

Hmmm.....
Upon reflection I am somewhat confused by what you say: ".... they work fine in all apps except The GIMP ...". So this to me implies that the "xset fp+" has worked under some circumstances? Perhaps you can explain further?
I think it would also be helpful to post your X11 config file complete with a copy of the X server log.
I must admit that I am a Gnome user who recently build Gnome 2.2 complete with AA and TT font support. I have a vague recollection of coming across some documentation which said you need to rebuild The Gimp if you wanted AA and TT support. Furthermore I thought KDE3 had AA and TT support built in? But your error is from xset!?
Hope these ramblings are of some help.
Kind regards,
Simon
