Sounds like your overdriving the monitor. Boot to mode 3 SaX2 -l this will force 800x600 SaX2 Call dell and ask for the resolutions supported or use VESA and try the standard 1024x768 and 60Mhz. I have a desktop and futura monitor so I directly fiddled with SaX2 and vesa which worked fine.

I run my Dell lcd (same) at 1280x1024 @ 70Hz and I'm using the generic lcd driver that you can choose in SaX2 and my image is really pretty good. Here's the portion from my XF86Config: Section "Monitor" Option "CalcAlgorithm" "CheckDesktopGeometry" DisplaySize 320 240 HorizSync 30-82 Identifier "Monitor[0]" ModelName "1280X1024@70HZ" Option "DPMS" VendorName "--> LCD" VertRefresh 57-70 UseModes "Modes[0]" EndSection John
