[opensuse] Restart Sound?
I googled and found one thing that told me to killall -KILL xine but that doesn't work. I have an issue where something - in this case a .flv file downloaded from YouTube - kills Konqueror and thus my sound. So far the only resolution is to reboot. Any other ideas? I'm on KDE 3.5x with openSUSE 10.3. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Why would "killing" Konqueror (which should be defined / clarified) impair the function of your sound system? One presumably idiosyncratic symptom on my SuSE Linux 10.0 system is that after each (KDE) login, I have sound mostly working, but for some reason, sounds from Gaim are not heard. But if I go into the KDE Control Center to the Sound and Multimedia section's Sound System control panel and click the Test Sound button (which does produce the test sound), sounds in Gaim work thereafter, until the next time I log out and back in again or reboot. Given the infrequency with which I log in and the non-critical nature of sound from Gaim, I've never bothered to diagnose this odd failure, so I have no idea what the underlying problem is. Anyway, you might want to try the same "procedure." It's certainly less disruptive than rebooting!
Any other ideas?

I've read Randall's response to you so I am only adding (I hope! :-) ) a small extra info to the above. As you would recall, in Linux (?oS) the extension of the file is really not important as the file type is recognised by the some indicator INSIDE the file; meaning that the flv file can be played on amarok, kaffeine, etc. If the flv extension is causing you some problem then either get rid of it or alter it to some other extension. Ciao. -- Be nice to people on your way up - you'll see the same people on your way down. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Interesting. Yeah, it is bizarre how it will die. If I double-click on the .flv file (which is my tendency) I get the message that Konqueror "crashed." If I right-click and open with either MPlayer or VLC it works fine. I have since changed the filetype in the right-click menu to allow VNC to open the files. Of course, I just checked and realized I can't play the files now because I have VirtualBox running and it completely hogs the sound driver. (IOTW, my Wintendo guest has sound but the Linux host doesn't.) Thanks to John for the command to restart. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

It depends on setup. You can associate programs with extensions. Qustion: Is it possible to associate programs with file types instead of extensions? Not unnecessarily true. Some programs (can't remember exactly which ones) still use the extension to recognize the file type. Probably old windows programmers that haven't been fully assimilated into the collective yet.
