socklist or netstat -plant
Hi, These list entries for "inetd" and the port numbers only. Unless you are familiar with port assignments this is somewhat obscure. PeterB -- -- Proud to be a SuSE Linux User since 5.2 --

If you are on the local machine try netstat -tupan and look for a program listening on port 21 (ftp) and 23 (telnet). You could also try telnet localhost 21. If you do not recieve a connection refused message then something is listening on that port. You can also do telnet localhost 23 to check for telnet. YOu can also do this remotely telnet *host or ip address* 21.. etc. etc. I often use telnet as a simple test to see if a tcp port is open. Its crude i know, but it gets the job done. No connection refused = machine is listening! BTW please do not use telnet unless you absolutely must. Its inherently insecure. Use SSH instead. It provides the same basic funtionality with MUCH more security. Also you can use sftp which will let you login and transer files over ssh. If you are using SuSE you might already have it installed. If you do not its a few RPM's away so you can have a MUCH more robust and secure system. -- #------------------------ #Eric Bambach #Eric@CISU.net #------------------------
