Anyone know how to disable console blanking? I do not have DPMS mode enabled, or APM installed on the box, yet the console still "blanks" after a few minutes of inactivity. I have looked all over, and I can find nothing explaining how to disable it! I know it's not putting the monitor to sleep, because I don't get the amber LED on the monitor. It just blanks the screen! I know!! (Hand up, waving!!)
setterm -blank 0
Put it in one of the startupscripts and you'll never have a blanked console
again. :)

I have it in my boot.local as well. Windows as far back as 95 has a "Low Power Standby" feature for all monitors, and you can set a time. This puts the monitor in that mode, judging from the orange flashing light on my monitor. Is there an equivalent for Linux? A util, maybe? You don't need APM for this because I have it turned off on this machine and it still works fine. On 16 Sep 2001, Mikke Mattsson wrote:

You've got to be kidding me? That's it? Ha!
I'll give it a try and see what happens! I've been wondering about this one
for a while!

More info regarding this Screen Blanking problem. I did the setterm -blank
0 in my boot.local, but that did not seem to fix the problem! After a bit
more research (and a hint from a friend), I found that xset held what i was
looking for!
First I tried "xset s noblank". That STOPPED my machine from blanking the
screen, however it put up a gray screen with an X on it instead. After
that, I did an "xset s no" to disable the screensaver itself. I am waiting
now to see if it blanks or changes the screen.
You can also do an "xset q" to see your current "settings". By running
"xset s no" it set the screensaver timeout from 600 to 0.
It looks like the setterm -blank 0 is for the terminal only (doesn't factor
in when running X). Of course, looking back at my original post, that is
exactly what I was asking for! Doh!
Thanks to all!

I had a similar experience, yesterday. The difference here was that my KDE desktop was blanked. APM was disabled, and I was not using a screensaver. Nothing I did would allow me to move from that blanked desktop. I finally hit the 'big switch' and started over. I await comments and answers to Joseph Hobbs' dilemma, in hopes I can learn something from them.
