How to use a WIndows XP printer via samba?
Hi I'm trying to configure suse 9 to print to a Epson CX3200 that is on a shared windows xp machine. When configuring the printer on yast I selected "Print via SMB Network Server" and followed all the steps. Everything seemed to be right (yast detects the printer on winXP). The only problem is that nothing is happening! When sending a job the "processing" state remains forever... Does anyone have any idea? Thanks Gustavo

I had the same problem. I used the Non Yast driver for my XP Epson printer, and also in winXP, add and remove Windows components -> Other Networking and Print Services, and add Unix print services. Works like a charm with an Epson Stylus Photo 720 this way. Thanks for the help... I installed the Unix print service and things still don't work. On yast i tried to change the spooler from cups to LPRng. For my surprise at least the test page during the yast setup worked. But for some strange reason printing still doesn't work with any other program. What do you mean by non-yast driver? How did you manually setup your printer? Thanks again Gustavo On Sun, 2003-11-02 at 01:10, Patrick Heffernan wrote:

In yast2 where you select your printer model, there is a button labelled "Use non-YaST2 ppd file". Pressing that will bring up a file selector dialog. Go to the Epson file folder, and select your printer model there. -- Patrick Heffernan Maryvale Computer Service Useless Invention: Umbrella with a skylight. ----------------------------------------------------------------

Gustavo, I have been wrestling with this same problem for months. Could not get the XP printer to work from Suse. I did get it to work using Patrick's suggestion using the XP Unix Print services. But, after you install the service on XP you have to start it. Go to Control Panel/Administrative Tools/Services. Find the service called TCP/IP Print Server and start it. After that you can set it to start on Automatic. Then, reconfigure your printer on Suse. Start from scratch and use LPR (not SMB/Samba). The unix print service in XP uses LPR. It should find the IP address of your XP box, and then the shared printer. I used the Yast drivers as they are a better fit for my HP Deskjet, but not sure if this matters. That should work. I can now print from Konquer and other apps, but for some reason can't print from Kmail wihch seems to crash. Still working on that one. As an assisde, I have not been successfuel in getting print to work on the XP box using Samba. You should not need the XP unix printer service to print with Samba. Best regards, Linuxjim

Hi Finally I got suse 9 printing via samba on a winXP machine. The solution (at least for me) was the most simple one!!! I went to YAST and selected "Print via SMB network server". On the next screen, when I pressed "Lookup" for the "host name of printer server" it came up with server.mshome.net. When configuring the remaining fields and pressing Test remote SMB access, everything was fine. But in fact it wasn't!!! I had to change the host name to "server" not "server.mshome.net". And everything worked!! I had this "brilliant idea" by reading the suse knowledge base: http://portal.suse.com/sdb/en/2002/04/jsmeix_print-80-probleme.html I already tested with kde programs and firebird... all working!
