That's because this kernel is based on vanilla, which does not have any SUSE patches.

2) I am was unable to compile nvidia kernel module for kernel-default-2.6.18_rc1-jen27.i586.rpm.

Works for me.

After "cloneconfig" and "make prepare"

You do not need these. Instead, you have to install kernel-source.

nvidia installer states that there are no version information. What's wrong?
