The first time after bootup that I dial in to my ISP, I get connected with no problem. If I disconnect and later try to reconnect, I get one of the following two error messages: i) Cannot open /dev/modem: No such device, OR ii) Cannot open /dev/modem: Input/output error. The same computer, modem and ISP work fine under Windows. Sometimes a solution is to log out and log in again; at other times I have to reboot. Has anyone had a similar problem? geno

Well, I've a similar problem, but I'm not getting as clean an error message. When I attempt to bring up a ppp link the second time (or any other use of the modem, for that matter), the machine locks up solid. The machine in question: Dell Latitude CPi D266, 128MB, 4G. SuSE 7.1 (SuSE 6.4 installed from CD, updated to 7.1 personal from CD, then updated via FTP from the 'current' directory.) Modem is Dell/Motorola 33.6 PCMCIA modem. I have discovered a circumvention: If I issue (as root) 'cardctl eject 0; cardctl insert 0' after the first online session, a second attempt will work. I haven't yet attempted to substitute a different PCMCIA modem, to see if it might be an anomaly with this specific modem... -- Rick Green "I have the heart of a little child, and the brain of a genius. ... and I keep them in a jar under my bed"
