[opensuse] Noob 3d Desktop
Hi me again I installed the NVIDA drivers for linux and my graphics are 100% perfect except that it gives me a message that 3D is not enabled. When I ran the Mandriva Live DVD I had 3D effects from the start. How do I configure this? Do I need to install any thing? Any thoughts, raves and/or rants would be appreciated. What nVidia driver version did you install? Did you change (or allow the installer to change) the video driver named in your xorg.conf? Quick way to check... go to /etc/X11 and then type: less xorg.conf Look for the section near the end of the file where the video driver is defined. Does it say "nv" or "nvidia"? Sorry to say but I don't have the version number with me. I can tell you that it did modify the xorg.conf as it asked me if I wanted to make backup which I let it do. I will check the file tonight and let you know. When I looked at this link http://www.suse.de/~sndirsch/nvidia-installer-HOWTO.html I did not find the 8600 GT listed there. -----Original Message----- From: Clayton [mailto:smaug42@gmail.com] Sent: 16 April 2008 11:10 AM To: opensuse@opensuse.org Subject: Re: [opensuse] Noob 3d Desktop perfect the

Well... I have an 8600GT and it works perfectly using the nVidia binary drivers. I have a feeling it is something small :-) Have you tested that OpenGL works? eg open a terminal and run glxgears. Do you get a smooth animation? The fps (although NOT an accurate fps value) should be around 8000 with a properly configured 8600GT if you leave the glxgears window at its default size. In older versions of the nVidia drivers, the 3D thing was inaccurately reported as not working by SAX2 although it was actually working fine. I haven't ran SAX2 in a long time though.. not since nVidia started providing the nvidia-settings tool... so I don't know if SAX2 still reports 3D as disabled even though it is actually enabled. Will try tonight and give feedback. Actually I have not even looked at the 3d Effect. How would I check that it is working? Switching between desktops? -----Original Message----- From: Clayton [mailto:smaug42@gmail.com] Sent: 16 April 2008 11:50 AM To: opensuse@opensuse.org Subject: Re: [opensuse] Noob 3d Desktop

It depends on what you call 3D. 3D to SAX2 is simply that it supports what everyone calls 3D Acceleration... so OpenGL accelerated graphics... you can test that it is working by starting up a Linux game that uses OpenGL, or something simple like running glxgears. If "3D" is not enabled, glxgears or an OpenGL game won't start. If you are talking 3D effects as in Compiz (for example the Desktop Cube), that is another thing completely... a step above simply getting your video card working right... but closely related. That page only lists 'legacy' cards, not those that are supported by the current driver, AFAICT. So *not* finding your card is *good* :) Cheers, Dave -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Guys, You want to know if 3D is working? Open a konsole and type 3Ddiag. It will tell you. Bob S -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I will get to the 3d Problem a little later. My sound card is making me mad. To be honest I would like to get into mySQL, JBoss, Tomcat and Apache at the moment but I cant work without sound. My system is dual boot. Got a nice 160GB drive just for linux. So if I need to play games I can just pop into the M$ World for a moment. Will follow up as soon as I get past the Sound Issue. Thanks for all the responses though. -----Original Message----- From: Bob S [mailto:911@sanctum.com] Sent: 17 April 2008 03:59 AM To: opensuse@opensuse.org Subject: Re: [opensuse] Noob 3d Desktop On Wednesday 16 April 2008 06:17:16 am Dave Howorth wrote: the

Last night I got the sound card issues sorted out so I went on to the 3D issues. Here is what I found. When I tried to enable compiz for the XGL Window Manager effect I was told that my 8600 GT was not found in the XGL database and 3D effect was thus not possible. It suggested that I run SAX2 and see if it could solve the problem. Well Sax did not help either. I did install the NVIDA drivers. Can anyone help me here on how to solve this problem. Is there any utils I can run to setup and diagnose my 3d Acceleration in openSuSE apart from the SaX util?
