I just installed Suse 8.0, I am confused tho, if I download something like PGP how do I get the program installed? -- Your favorite stores, helpful shopping tools and great gift ideas. Experience the convenience of buying online with Shop@Netscape! http://shopnow.netscape.com/
Thomas, PGP should be on your 8.0 discs, so you could just use Yast2 to install it and a host of other things. But, when you do find something you want to download, it will often be tarballed and gunzipped. (The extension will be programfoo.tar.gz). Then one usually does something like this: gunzip -dc moz*.tar.gz | tar -xvf - That's the command that mozilla.org tells you to use if you download the latest version of mozilla. Most other .tar.gz will be similar, but after you do the above command look at the README or INSTALL file for information for that specific program. You might have downloaded an rpm file with a name like programfoo.rpm instead, in which case you'll typically do something like: rpm –-ivh programfoo.rpm And if you downloaded source code, you generally have to do the following steps: 1) ./configure 2) make 3) make install but this can vary depending on the program too. Also, the default suse 8.0 install does not include "make" or even the "gcc" I think, so go to Yast2 and install those from the CDs before trying to install from source. P.S. I'm new at this too, your mileage may vary, various other disclaimers and waivers apply... Thomas M Conway wrote:

That would depend on what format you downloaded it.
If it is the source in a tar.gz format, you net to uncompress it,
compile it, an then install it.
If it is a SuSE rpm, (pgp-xxx.rpm) then you can use the rpm installer:
As user root, just do rpm -Uvh
probably the easiest way (assuming you have downloaded a RPM package) is to use kpackage. you will find the menu entry under system. as an aside you may want to run YOU the online update tool since there are a significant number of updates available. strt yast2 and select online update. Hope this answers your question. On Friday 21 June 2002 23:15, Thomas M Conway wrote:
