[S.u.S.E. Linux] intranet setup
My employer has finally heard enough of my bragging about linux and wants to see what it can do. I need to set up an intranet. I am having trouble finding good docs on Apache. Any hints??? Do I make the intranet server the nameserver? Do I need a certain daemon running to be a nameserver, or just tell all the boxes that it is?? I installed the apache from the CD's, how do I administer it now?? Can I set up multiple domains served, or do I need a separate IP for each separate domain?? The sooner I can show results, the better. Help!! I found the docs that came with apache, and I just might have to uninstall the rpm and install the source so I can follow the directions verbatim. If it comes down to it, I will have to buy Netscape Fasttrack Server. I have used that and it's easy!! thanks in advance mc -- To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e

Do I make the intranet server the nameserver? Not necessary, if your company connects to the Internet using a leased line - usually the provider maintaines a name server. An own name server is much effort and
APACHE: The Definitive Guide, O'REILLY, ISBN 1-56592-250-6 pays only, if it's a BIG company.
Do I need a certain daemon running to be a nameserver, or just tell all the boxes that it is?? Tell them the name server at your ISP
I installed the apache from the CD's, how do I administer it now?? By hand or get a graphical admin tool on the Internet
Can I set up multiple domains served, or do I need a separate IP for each separate domain?? You can setup virtual hosting on Apache
The sooner I can show results, the better. Help!! One *excellent* new book on Intranets: NT and UNIX Intranet Secrets, IDG Books, ISBN 0-7645-3097-6

Why bother with Apache if you anyway need Fasttrack ? Technically it's not really better than Apache, but has SSL and, the most important: Browser/Web based Administration. If you want that, why you don't get the Caldera OpenLinux Standard 1.2 Server (COL) ? Fasttrack and special connectivities (e.g. NDS) for companies are already included. COL is not as rich as SuSE with applications, but better suited for 'normal' companies because more easy to setup and use and graphical Admin tools by RedHat (staff likes that). SuSE I treat best for general use, most apps, sophisticated setup etc. 'normal (Windows)' technicans get confused with such power. ( I had to teach the staff after setting up Intranet/Internet, I was lucky they understand the easy Caldera after a while) SuSE is my choice for Workstations - Caldera for Company Servers. <A HREF="http://www.caldera.com/</A">http://www.caldera.com/</A> Michael, usually an Intranet will be connected to the outside and you will have to use a firewall. Also you have to consider carefully the IP assignment etc. e.g. use 'secure' IP 192.168.x.x in a Class C net, etc. Please tell me if you need info about firewalling for Linux. Get a good book on that topic, also because you will find very important information about network planning (Intranet+security). e.g. Internet Firewalls and Network Security by New Riders.
