[opensuse] Yahoo Web Beacons
Hi, I just ran across this info on another forum to which I belong, and I thought that you might be interested if you don't already know about it. I don't know how this will affect Linux boxes. Yahoo is Tracking Group Members If you belong to ANY Yahoo Groups - be aware that Yahoo is now using "Web Beacons" to track every Yahoo Group user. It's similar to cookies, but allows Yahoo to record every website and every group you visit, even when you're not connected to Yahoo. Here is the page to go to if you desire to opt-out in the US: http://info.yahoo.com/privacy/us/yahoo/opt_out/targeting/details.html Note that Yahoo's invasion of your privacy - and your ability to opt-out of it - is not user-specific. It is MACHINE specific. That means you will have to opt-out on every computer (and browser) you use. As explained on http://info.yahoo.com/privacy/us/yahoo/webbeacons/details.html they are not specific to the operating system. What is "electronic file" is of course open to interpretation. In general tracking interests and serving ads, that might be interesting for person, is better preactice then slamming any add. They have to make money somewhere. -- Regards, Rajko -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Sorry, .. but if you're blocking cookes & JS there is no way to store tracking information ON your machine. The page above is actually a 'front' to have you STORE, most likely, a cookie on your machine that Yahoo can then use in future operation to track your browsing just like Google-Analytics. As proof, go to that page, turn off JS & Cookies - there is no way to 'Opt Out' because there is no way to set a cookie ON your machine indicating to Yahoo that you have 'Opted Out'. If you have any concerns about privacy at all, the steps you take will include: 1) Download and use a browser capably of being reasonable 'safe' by blocking cookies and JS. 2) Use appropriate plug-ins to allow cookies or JS from sites you WISH to allow - e.g. NoScript for Firefox.
