Also I can no longer use my keyboard to choose another operating system or to start in safe mode, even from the SuSE CD. the keyboard only works after the booting process starts and the usb system register the keyboard.
This is BEFORE the system boots. Sounds like BIOS settings.
It may be but I can't access BIOS at starup .
I have been updating my system using apt. I did try to update my KDE software two days ago after successfully updating some other packages thanks to help from Franklin Maurer on this list (Thanks Franklin).
In the process it seems that I'v damaged something important. Any ideas on how to proceed?
For starters, what components are in /etc/apt/sources.list? Also the output of 'rpm -qa |grep kde'

Here it is: rpm -qa | grep kde
kdebase3-kdm-3.1.4-41 kdeartwork3-xscreensaver-3.1.4-34
It seems you only managed to upgrade these two packages. Your kde problems are probably caused by this? Try upgrading with apt or using synaptic again. In synaptic choose upgradeable from the drop down menu, and then choose each and every kde - you see.

Also you can remove kde-stable, mozilla, and suse-projects. kde-stable houses the old packages, mozilla packages will come from james ( ulb), and I have no idea what suse-projects has. -- Franklin Maurer Using SuSE 8.2 Pro

Hello Franklin, I tried this. I think it worked because when I ran rpm -qa | grep kde I don't get a list of kde components. This means that apt-get upgraded the kde package and it is now not in SuSE's rpm database from what I understand. Also the system crashed before finishing the upgade. I used apt-get upgrade. I'm not sure because I cannot double check. When I try to start synaptic I get this error message: sudo /usr/sbin/synaptic /usr/sbin/synaptic: error while loading shared libraries: /opt/gnome2/lib/ libglade-2.0.so.0: cannot read file data: Input/output error I thought I could solve this problem by reloading synaptic using apt-get: # apt-get install synaptic Reading Package Lists... Done Building Dependency Tree... Done synaptic is already the newest version. 0 packages upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 removed and 122 not upgraded. How can I solve this input/output error and get synaptic going again? Thanks, Jerome

Actually, i think the list of kde 3.1.4 packages should have shown up. The apt packages make it in to "SuSE's rpm database". Apt is just a way to get them, and a different place to get them from. Open kpackage, gnorpm or yast2(software) and search for kde. Hopefully you still have kde packages.
I'm not sure because I cannot double check. When I try to start synaptic I get this error message: sudo /usr/sbin/synaptic /usr/sbin/synaptic: error while loading shared libraries: /opt/gnome2/lib/ libglade-2.0.so.0: cannot read file data: Input/output error
I've never run across this. Which libglade is installed? (Change the kde in the rpm -qa command to libglade) Hopefully someone else knows how to fix the I/O error, all i can think of is running SuSEconfig. -- Franklin Maurer Using SuSE 8.2 Pro
