[SLE] SUSE10.1 demo version
I have a magazine cover disk CD of a SUSE10.1 demo version. On booting, there is the choice of running it as a KDE Live CD, a Gnome live CD, or installing it on the hard drive. I don't know if this is a 'cut-down' beta version or the final version. If I install it, will it be a good example of the purchased version (less many packages, of course) and give me a good idea as to what the full version will be like, or does it fundamentally differ from the bought edition? I'd like to test it before considering buying, especially as my 10.0 is running well. I can't find anything about this demo version either on the SUSE site, or with Google. Many thanks for any information. It's the cover CD on the July issue (number 68) of Linux Magazine. The magazine's web site is: www.linux-magazine.com I can't find if it's available for download, or if you would have to buy the magazine. Hope this helps. Sorry, everyone! It's the cover "DVD" of Linux Magazine, not CD! At 4.1GB, it's a bit large for a CD. Why not go to www.opensuse.org/Download and download the real thing - all of released version of 10.1? Cheers. -- "It is well known that among the blind, the one-eyed man is king". Sorry, but it's not feasible. I'm on capped broadband. To download all of the released version would have to be spread over two months. That's OK. I always like to buy the latest version (if it's worth it!) mainly for the DVD and its extra packages. Plus, as there seems to be many alterations in 10.1, I will need the manual! No need for the manual. You already know enough from earlier versions to run10.1. I downloaded the 6 CD ISO files and created the DVD and so I don't have a manual - and am not lost without it. (Don't you have a friendly neighbour who could download the ISOs for you? Or perhaps the local Linux/Unix User Group who can burn a copy of the DVD (or CDs) for you? The manual is on the CDs/DVD you download/buy but it is only in a file format (many files in fact) and if you want a printed copy then you have to print it yourself. Basil and Jdd sur free. Thanks for your replies. I prefer a printed manual and to print it out myself would be a big job. A book is much more portable than my computer for reading. However, I'll use the manual on the DVD while I am trying 10.1. Then I'll make a decision whether to buy, keep using the cover version, or abandon 10.1 and go back to 10.0. I have the information I need, but I am extending this thread too much. So I'll shut up now! I should have mentioned this earlier..... From the comments I've seen from others, there is no manual for 10.1 with the purchased version- all you get is the (?)Start-up manual. The detailed manual which we all got to love in earlier versions is no more, and you have to print it out yourself (as I already intimated). Yep, but a couple of weeks or so ago someone else mentioned a magazine as having a DVD so I assumed (correctly) that it was a "typo" and Keith really meant a DVD (which he did, as he later corrected himself). I've got a peculiar keyboard here. Often, what comes out is completely different from what I have typed - usually spelling! The short answer is "yes". I installed this, and it seems fine. Install Smart, then upgrade Smart from Pascal's site, and you will get full access to all existing packages. Thanks for your reply, Kevin. The information you gave, is just what I was looking for. So, the Linux Magazine DVD seems to be the final version and not a beta version. That's good news!
