Re: [SLE] SCSI Epson ADF scanning doesn't work
Additional information: I just got the following mail from a reader of my August mail about this problem. It looks like the ADF problem is related to newer versions of the epson sane library, as version 1.0.8 worked, see below. Thanks, Terje J. Hanssen ------------------ Dear Terje,
Flatbed scanning works, but trying to use the ADF results in the following error: "Failed to start scanner: Error during device I/O", and no scanning starts. (Just to verify that the ADF works: the included scanner software, Epson Smartpanel for scanners and Epson Twain5, works ADF scanning in Windows).
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- *I had the same Epson ADF problem, using Suse linux 9.1. Flatbed scanning worked fine. Previously using Suse 8.1 the ADF worked fine. I then found that the problem is with version 1.0.13 of the epson sane library. I solved the problem by downgrading this library to version 1.0.8 (that I had in Suse 8.1). Now the ADF works fine. For doing that, I copied the old /usr/lib/sane/libsane-epson.so.1.0.8 to the /usr/lib/sane/ directory, and relinked the symbolic links /usr/lib/sane/libsane-epson.so and /usr/lib/sane/libsane-epson.so.1 to it, instead of to /usr/lib/sane/libsane-epson.so.1.0.13. Then performed ldconfig. I did not check version 1.0.14 of sane. Hope this will work for you as well, Sincerely, * Terje J. Hanssen wrote:
My SCSI Epson Perfection 1640SU OFFICE model includes an ADF, and in addition a TPU/filmadapter option (as included in the PHOTO model). The included software for Windows, Epson Smartpanel for scanners and Epson Twain5, support both the ADF and the TPU.
Now I try to get this scanner to work with Suse9.1 Pro using the included Sane 1.0.13 and Xsane 0.94. Flatbed scanning looks to work ok with both. But when selecting scanner source ADF in Xsane, the following error message occures: "Failed to start scanner: Error during device I/O", and no scanning starts. Neither Kooka works with the ADF selection. I haven't tried the TPU option yet , because I first wish to get the ADF to work.
Any experiences, ideas or suggestion?
Thanks, Terje J. Hanssen

Try vuescan from http://www.hamrick.com, it doesn't depend on the sane libraries, supports the 1640XL, I don't know if you'll have any luck with the SU as I don't know if they use the same basic engine for the Expression and the Perfection, but with enhanced specs for the Expression. I can now confirm that also I have succeeded (at last!) to get my Epson ADF scanner to work with Xsane. After I got copy of the previous libsane-epson.so.1.0.8 from Suse Linux 8.1, I followed the suggested installation procedure below to apply it on Suse 9.1. Terje J. Hanssen wrote:

I have just installed a new PCI sound card, Creative SB Audigy LS on my Athlon 700 PC, which has a dual boot Win2k and Suse 9.1 Pro. First I installed the Creative driver from the CD for Win2k, and the sound card worked quite ok testing it by playing music CD and MP3 from my DVD player (HP DVD writer). Next I booted SuSe 9.1 Pro, and verified in the Yast2 Hardware info that the Creative sound card was detected as SB Audigy LS. Then I started the Yast2 Hardware Sound tool. (Maybe at the first boot and trial was asked if I wished to configure the new hardware). The first configuration screen was empty without any sound card listed. I selected <Add a sound card>, next manufacturer "Creative Labs" and sound card model "SB Audigy" (the last "LS" lacked) and <Next>. The second screen told that the sound card SB Audigy would be configured as the first sound card (snd-card-0). I choosed the default selection "Fast automatic setup" and <Next> The third screen displayed an Error which told: "An error occured during the installation of SB Audigy. The kernel module snd-emu10k1 for sound support could not be loaded. This can be due to wrong module parameters, for example invalid in/out- or IRQ-parameters". The left part of the screen told: Verify that tha package ALSA (from the 'snd-serie is correct installed). If the problem continue, try different altertives for the ALSA module. If the sound card still doesn't work, try OSS/Free or another module. In that case you have to start the sound configuration module from a shell with the command "YaST2 sound .oss" I tried the latter commad as root, but didn't find the right Creative SB Audigy LS driver and quitted Yast2. I have tried to run an Suse 9.1 update installation from the DVD and selected update only the installed packages, in case the sound card would be detected and installed. But this didn't help. Any suggestions what I can do and try now, possibly experiences with this Creative sound card installation? Regards, Terje J. Hanssen

Your best bet it to download the non regparm package from opensound.com if you are using the 2.6 kernel. Make sure you have the kernel sources installed as well for the correct same kernel version. Opensound works great on the Audigy LS. Marek

I wonder why I can't see Creative SB Audigy LS mentioned among the supported cards at the opensound.com list? And is there available complete procedures to do this for Suse 9.1? According to the Suse hardware database, Audigy LS is not supported in Suse 9.1 which included Alsa 1.0.3. It was also mentioned that it was possible this sound card would become supported in Alsa 1.0.6 (Suse 9.2?) http://hardwaredb.suse.de/showProduct.php?LANG=en_UK&searchtype=simple&product_id=24761&arch_id=&dist_id=&PHPSESSID=10b55c83047e837635deb988e8430de4 Thanks, Terje J. The LS falls under another Audigy driver and is picked up, i am not at the box right now. Don't worry if its not in the list, it works ok. Just download the file, unpack it, read the "readme" or read the install instructions on the webpage and run he setup file. Marek
