RE: [SuSE Linux] Linux instead of NT
Where could I get information on setting up the Samba server? -----Original Message----- From: Jonathan [SMTP:jfondow@sprintmail.com] Sent: 29 June 1999 03:25 To: Jon Pennington Cc: suse-linux-e@suse.com Subject: Re: [SuSE Linux] Linux instead of NT Jon,
Will this prevent users of Win9x from hitting the ESC key and accessing the machine as a standalone workstation with full rights to the local hard drive? I don't see how. If it does, great! Tell me more, but I think that the lack of security in the Win9x environment prevents this requirement. Jon,
From what you describe, Samba will work. We are using Linux/Samba with a client base of 70 users and we use Sambe to handle all login validation. If a user doesn't have a valid account then they can't log onto the PC. Hope this helps.

I've been wondering for some time now if it's possible to use a Linux machine for authentication. Win9x clients can authenticate against NT, Novell, and numerous other network systems, but can you make a 9x box
log in
to a Linux server?
The scenario: A small business, 30 or so users, 20 or so PC's, a small file server (Linux) and a shared gateway to the Internet (DSL, ISDN, Frame Relay, etc.). I'm sure that the a Linux box can run the gateway/firewall with ease, and another larger Linux box can be used as a workgroup-class file server thanks to Samba, but can you use the larger Linux host's /etc/passwd file for the 9x machine's access?
I'd like to see the kind of security that NWClient32 uses, where if you are not a valid user in the given domain/context, you can't even access the machine. Can Samba handle this? I hope I've made myself clear, but if I haven't, let me know...
