[opensuse] Why can't I read my journal?
According to man journalctl: "All users are granted access to their private per-user journals. However, by default, only root and users who are members of a few special groups are granted access to the system journal and the journals of other users. Members of the groups "systemd-journal", "adm", and "wheel" can read all journal files." However, this seems to contradict the above statement: 13:28 bob@blackbox:~> groups users audio cdrom vboxusers systemd-journal 13:28 bob@blackbox:~> journalctl --user No journal files were opened due to insufficient permissions. What permissions might I be lacking? Bob -- Bob Williams System: Linux 4.4.36-8-default Distro: openSUSE 42.2 (x86_64) Desktop: KDE Frameworks: 5.26.0, Qt: 5.6.1 and Plasma: 5.8.2

Bob
I don't know Bob, that works for me. I can get my logs:
jsa@poulsbo:~> journalctl --user -efn 5 -- Logs begin at Sun 2016-12-04 15:26:26 PST. -- Dec 19 17:14:56 poulsbo.norcomsoftware.com org.kde.kwalletd5[3878]: Migration agent starting... And I can get the system logs:
jsa@poulsbo:~> journalctl --system -efn 3 -- Logs begin at Sun 2016-12-04 15:25:56 PST. -- Dec 19 17:23:11 poulsbo.norcomsoftware.com org.kde.powerdevil.backlighthelper[4784]: QDBusArgument: read from a write-only object Dec 19 17:24:35 poulsbo.norcomsoftware.com kernel: SFW2-INext-DROP-DEFLT IN=eth0 OUT= MAC=00:15:c5:55:97:51:00:10:18:19:b9:5b:08:00 SRC=190.226.113.32 DST=192.168.2.232 LEN=129 TOS=0x00 PREC=0x20 TTL=108 ID=18163 PROTO=UDP SPT=16216 DPT=45949 LEN=109

That was it. I thought it was sufficient to just logout and login again when adding myself to a new group. Thank you. Bob -- Bob Williams System: Linux 4.4.36-8-default Distro: openSUSE 42.2 (x86_64) Desktop: KDE Frameworks: 5.26.0, Qt: 5.6.1 and Plasma: 5.8.2

Actually, the reboot wasn't sufficient, as the problem returned. I eventually found that the log file is owned by root:root, so I did blackbox:~ # chown root:systemd-journal /var/log/journal/a0848146a8854c519ce698d28901e824 which seems to have given me user access to the journal. How did that happen Bob? Was your install an upgrade or fresh install? My 42.2 came out of the box with journals set to root:systemd-journal This is one of those things that chkstat runs around and changes permissions on at every boot. (Question: Is chkstat even run any more?) So it should have been set to root:systemd-journal unless you has an override in /etc/permissions.local . -- After all is said and done, more is said than done.

Yes, it is sufficient. Your problem must be something else. - -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R.
