[SuSE Linux] SuSE nasties
SuSE has some 'nasty' habits. One of them is lumping together different packages. For example readline-2.1 is packaged together with bash-2.01.1. It took me some time to find this out. The question now is if you want to install readline-2.2 how do you go about uninstalling readline-2.1, can yast or rpm do it? Further how can I get a more recent, preferably RPM version, of f2c. The f2c version packaged in RedHat 5.1 comfortably handels FORTRAN90. The version packaged in SuSE 5.2 does not! So I would like to try a more recent version. It would be very nice if SuSE, just like RedHat, had a contrib directory on the server where people could place contributed RPM's. Now we have to wait till SuSE packages something in the distribution or, in most cases, compile the sources ourselves. Another irritating habit is the "DOS naming" convention of the RPM's. You cannot immediately see which version is available and have to do some extra work. Bye, LenZ I don't mean to be petty, but this is the kind of thing, ( a visible change from the way things were that has been ANTICIPATED for some time ) should've been announced on the list. Also, LenZ why, is the book not updated to show the changes ( minor I know ) in the YaST menu for rc.config? I noticed some options there when I put 5.3 on my system like the 'generate perl system includes' etc and 'beautify /etc/hosts' that weren't there before. I don't mean to be nitpicky, but I think the book should reflect the changes in the distribution, especially if the changes include something like a modified YaST. Hmm, IIRC, Bodo made an announcement about this. It was even mentioned in the Linux Weekly news: <A HREF="http://lwn.net/1998/1105/suseftp.html</A">http://lwn.net/1998/1105/suseftp.html</A> Maybe you have missed that one.

I agree on the point that no one RTFMs. Bodo's announcement was mainly about our new ftp-Server, not about the contrib-directory. Maybe this was the reason that this piece of information had slipped through...

Thanks for the hint. I've forwarded it to our manual author. But I guess you know, that development sometimes is on a faster pace than the documentation :) Best regards, LenZ ------------------------------------------------------------------ Lenz Grimmer SuSE GmbH mailto:grimmer@suse.de Schanzaeckerstr. 10 <A HREF="http://www.suse.de/~grimmer</A">http://www.suse.de/~grimmer</A> 90443 Nuernberg, Germany - To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e

It was announced on the SuSE Announce list on 29th October, which seems to be the right place for announcements to me. I would recommend everyone subscribes to that list, (suse-announce-e@suse.de) it's very low traffic and important announcements don't get mixed in with the general content of this list, where they're liable to be overlooked. I had been thinking the 'announce' list was primarily for software and that I'd see most of the same information sprawled about on the web, and so subscribing would be unneccesary. Guess I was mistaken given this information was around the 29th and I heard hide nor hair. I made the correction. -M - To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e
