Trying to update 7.1 from a local directory. It keeps bombing out with "Cannot find SuSE installation directory. Wanna burn these to a cd. THankies Ambrosius

This is different from other distro - so it came out of the blue for me and I think the same thing happened to Dave. SuSE should have an HOWTO for this and cross index it about 70+ different ways - that way newbies can't help but run into the guide.
