Hi SuSE, Sorry for sending this mail once again, but i did not get any reply to my 3 mails which i sent previously. Actually, I am interested in upgrading my 6.3 OS to 6.4 OS. My m/c is a P III with Intel 810 chipset. Are there any advantages in upgrading from 6.3 to 6.4 OS?? Any performance issues in 6.4?? Or can i just upgrade my Xfree 86 version 3.3.5 (which comes with 6.3) to 3.3.6 (in 6.4) or 4.0?? Also, Can i use the 6.4 CDs for upgrading only the Xserver?? Hope i get a reply this time. Obviously it pays to be pertinacious :)

Ask the other way around. Are you satisfied with 6.3? Does it work as you like it? Or do you need new versions of some packages because you need the features? "Never touch a running system" still applies here. We have a small list of "what's new" in SuSE Linux 6.4 on our web pages. Try to find out, if you really need anything of this. I guess noone in this list can tell you, if you need to update or not - this is your personal decision.

Not that I have noticed.

Sure! You might need to update the kernel as well, I am not sure about the i810.

Yes, you can. Or you can simply download the package from our ftp site and its mirrors. Hi, Thanks for the update! Basically, i am interested in the Xserver part of the latest distribution i,e 6.4. Since, my m/c has a 810 chipset, i am interested in getting the latest XFcom_810 or XF86 (XSVGA) driver which can deal better with the Intel 810. I read the 6.4 release notes, wherein it contains references to the 810 chipset drivers. In fact, i downloaded the Xf86 4.0 rpm files from SuSE ftp site. But, i am a little apprehensive going about upgrading the existing xf86 3.3.5 to xf86 4.0 since you have mentioned that the existing kernel (2.2.13) might not be compatible with the latest xf86 4.0 version. Thanks in advance Raghav Lenz Grimmer wrote:
