Hello Linux folks! I want to use color flat bed SCSI scanner with my Linux box. When I looked into Linux hardware database I found that UMAX SCSI scanners are pretty much supported in Linux (SANE umax). Since there are not all UMAX SCSI scanners listed in this database and most of them are discontinued items I got a question: Can I use with Linux a new Umax Astra 2200 SCSI-2/USB flatbed scanner? Will it work with my Adaptec AIC-3860 and AIC-7890 onboard SCSI controllers? May be somebody can share its own experience about using scanner with Linux? What kind of scanner (brand name and model) would you advise me to buy for Linux box? I mean to scan reliably without head aches. All suggestions are gladly appreciated. Thanks, Alex. -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/

I use the Microtek ScanMaker E3. It is a older model. I had No problems in Linux with it. Loaded up the SCSI Modeule for my SCSI card and it was detected the first time. I used Yast1 to set the scanner up. I have never had any problems with the MicroTek and would recommend it to anyone. Unless you want the newest one, you might be able to find one of the E3 at a pretty good price. As far as your SCSI card goes, I would check on the manufacturers web sites for the card and scanner you decide on and see if they list any problems with certain SCSI cards. Hope this helps Nevada -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/

I would go with a Umax too. They *are* very good scanners, but not sure about Linux compatibility (i.e. I haven't looked into Linux compatibility). The Astra 1220 is a very good model. I'm not sure if you'll notice huge amounts of difference between it and the 2200. Hi, You can look at the current devel-release supported scanners as well as the tarball for devel release at: http://www.student.uit.no/~pere/linux/ It lists Umax 2200W as supprted. Nadeem Alexander Daniloff wrote:

I have a Umax 1220s scanner chained to an Adaptec 2930U. I can't seem to hardcode the SCSI driver in the kernel for the card but works with modules. The setup of the scanner was flawless with SuSE. I used Yast and all permissions and devices were set up properly. SuSE's versions of Kscan and Xsane worked out of the box. I got a newer version of Xsane, gtk, and saneUmax for a few more features. You can pick up a 1220s not the 1220p for less than 100$ US. I noticed the prices of the Adaptec's 2940 have dropped significantly, which I would recommend over the 2930 do to other OS's support. -Btm77 -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/
