I installed SuSE 8.0 with the sendmail package packed with it. I can telnet only localhost on port 25 but I cannot telnet computername on port 25. What is the problem? Thank you so much for your assistance.
Assuming that you have telnet services enabled in /etc/inetd.conf, you'll also need to install the telnet-server using YaST. -- JAY VOLLMER JVOLLMER@VISI.COM TEXT REFS DOUBLEPLUSUNGOOD SELFTHINK VERGING CRIMETHINK IGNORE FULLWISE
You do not require the telnet server to connect to the sendmail port - simply the telnet client. Putting the telnet server on a system is very insecure. It is possible you have not fully configured sendmail correctly. It is trying to do a lookup during the connection phase and is not allowing "localhost" connections. I would check your log files to look for anything of interest. And for goodness sakes, don't install the telnet server! ciao Kat PS -- you are better off with postfix instead of sendmail anyway -- it is an option during the install. Dear Kathee, Thank you so much for your answer. I mean that I can telnet to localhost on port 25, but I cannot "$ telnet computername 25" and it says "connection refuse". Thanks, Choth kathee wrote:

Dear Kathee,
Thank you so much for your answer. I mean that I can telnet to localhost on port 25, but I cannot "$ telnet computername 25" and it says "connection refuse".
On the machine you are trying to reach port 25 how is sendmail/postfix running basicaly the question is did you allow remote connection /etc/sysconfig/mail SMTPD_LISTEN_REMOTE="yes" By default SuSE will set sendmail to listen only local connections -- Togan Muftuoglu Unofficial SuSE FAQ Maintainer http://dinamizm.ath.cx

/etc/sysconfig/mail
SMTPD_LISTEN_REMOTE="yes"

And if this is not enough to make it work, you should check your firewall settings. Regards Ole
Dear Togan Muftuoglu, Thank you so much for your assistance. My co-worker has just told me and now it is working. You are right. I would like to deeply thank you so much. Best regards, Choth Togan Muftuoglu wrote:
