Lots of people, including me, have found these don't work on their laptops. It would appear that further work has to be done by the kernel group to make a device driver that can read from these slots if I understand the issue correctly. Meanwhile, for very very little money I purchased an external USB media reader and then it works fine. My understanding (although I must check this out) was that the media slots are a multi-reader internally USB attached... they should work just fine if your USB works ok. The only thing I have not plugged into mine is a micro-drive. Compact Flash and sd-ram work fine. Have you contacted HP regarding the difficulty... maybe defective unit?
