[SuSE Linux] ppp died solution at last!! Comments?
I've been trying off and on to get PPP working under SuSE as well as RedHat for about 3 months (off and on) now. I have a US Robotics (3Com) Courier V.Everything internal modem with jumpers. It is not a Winmodem and PNP was disabled. It was jumpered for Com2, IRQ3 and port 2f8. Under minicom I could dial ibm.net and get a clean connection but after 30 seconds I would get garbage on the screen. If I started pppd it would start but after about a minute it would die. Sometimes minicom would just disconnect and end with a message "Killed with a Signal 11". On another computer, my laptop, I could dial in with minicom and get an id password prompt with the same configuration. Eventually I dropped the speed of the modem down to 19200 and I could connect fine. I setup my ppp using kpp and finally I was on the net. As soon as I would bump the speed up I would get kill messages at 57600 and garbage at 115200. After much playing around I changed the symbolic link to reflect cua1 instead of /dev/modem and like magic I could set my port speed to 115,200 and everything worked ! On bootup the modem is assigned to /dev/ttyS1 and I didn't have any irq conflicts (ie:commands worked fine, even at 115200). Anybody have any ideas? BTW I found SuSEppp very confusing, kpp was much better.
Hi Steve, I'm sorry but instead of answers I'll ask you questions !! I did manage to connect to the net using kppp or a script based pppd connection the problem I have is that I cannot go faster than 45333 in kppp ( the setting is at 115200 but it never connect faster) . I have a professional message modem V90 56K. pppd refuses to init with a setting faster than 38400 !! and it connect a little slower. So I probably missed something !! anyone has a clue on this one ?? Best regards GH Portefait Steve wrote:

There are a couple of setserial commands you can put in boot.local. try: setserial /dev/ttyS1 spd_vhi setserial /dev/ttyS1 uart 16550A Look at man setserial Connecting at 45333 is pretty good, and is probably due to phone line quality, not your modem. Just because you have a 56k modem, does not mean you will always connect at 56000. I think the government limits the phone line connect rate for 56k modems to something less than 56k I can't remember the exact reason. What counts more than connect rate is download speeds. Try downloading something big, and see what rates you get on compressed files. Uncompressed files, like text, will be much higher due to software compression, and will report higher rates, even though the modem is downloading at the same speed. - To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e Check out the SuSE-FAQ at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A">http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A> and the archiv at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A">http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A>
