Well, I couldn't possibly comment on VMWare's anal habits, but I do know that
their support is crap (in my experience). There are some really helpful
people around on newsgroups, etc, but not directly from the company itself..
If you have to pay for a product, then it is reasonable to expect support.
People will always look for hacks - it may be "immoral" but I'm willing to
bet that 99% of the people who complain about this have done it at some point
themselves. Such as installing a friend's MS Office or something (before we
were all seduced by Linux!). I know that I have.
SuSE does include Workstation 2.04, but you still need to get a license code
and, as far as I am aware, you can't get them any more for 2.04.
Personally, I find Win4Lin vastly better for my purposes, although usb
support would be nice.

Does this link point to a license file generator?
http://www.mxlab.com/ftp/misc/crk/vmware/dm_203l.zip
Does it generate licenses that expire far into the future?
It appears to be a Win32 program, does it run in Wine?!
Does VMware not support their customers and therefore take it
up the arse?
Cheers,
