[opensuse] help for downloading xpi from addons.mozilla.org site
Hello: I would like to download (not to install) screengrab xpi with seamonkey web browser because I want to have the xpi file with its original name locally. When I visit the download page https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/screengrab-fix-version/versio... with my seamonkey web browser I cannot find any download link to the xpi files. I see only big green buttons with the message "Only with Firefox — Get Firefox Now!", and these buttons direct me to firefox download page. What I want is to save the xpi for later use. Why doesn't the addons page allow the download of the xpi files with different browsers? How can I find out the xpi download links? Thanks, Istvan -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Sorry for sending my answer accidentally to your address directly. I resend it to the list. Thanks for your reply, even it's unhelpful.

I agree with this. Who should be the addressee?
And saving xpi files for later, IMHO is useless, given the fact that in browser/add-on land things are moving quickly.
This is your opinion, my experience is different. (Furthermore the question was not if it is useful or not saving and xpi but how to do it.)

Which addons do you have installed? Maybe it makes a difference. I routinely suffer your same plight, a stupid PITA that addons assume you're accessing the addon page with the browser or profile or PC you wish to install to. I find sometimes the right click does the job, other times not. When it doesn't, I open the addon URL in a different browser and try again, usually Konq, sometimes Chromium, sometimes a non-current Firefox, until I get what I want. Eventually something works. -- "Wisdom is supreme; therefore get wisdom. Whatever else you get, get wisdom." Proverbs 4:7 (New Living Translation) Team OS/2 ** Reg. Linux User #211409 ** a11y rocks! bit the bullet to a small degree. you can get the xpi file and retain it locally. initiate installing the add-on in seamonkey. it will dl the xpi file and request you restart seamonkey to complete the install. close seamonkey and then copy the <name>.xpi file from below ~/.mozilla/seamonkey.xxxxxx.default/extensions/staged or if it installs immediately instead of requesting a restart, copy the xpi file from ~/.mozilla/seamonkey.xxxxxx.default/extensions, then uninstall the add-on. if you are worried about the add-on reporting back to big brother, disconnect from the internet as soon as you have completed the download. then tell seamonkey to un-install the add-on. -- (paka)Patrick Shanahan Plainfield, Indiana, USA @ptilopteri http://en.opensuse.org openSUSE Community Member facebook/ptilopteri Registered Linux User #207535 @ http://linuxcounter.net Photos: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/piwigo paka @ IRCnet freenode -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

I see only big green buttons with the message "Only with Firefox — Get Firefox Now!", and these buttons direct me to firefox download page. That is, the download links to the xpi files are not available for seamonkey browser. The buttons are linked to firefox download page.
close seamonkey and then copy the <name>.xpi file from below ~/.mozilla/seamonkey.xxxxxx.default/extensions/staged
or if it installs immediately instead of requesting a restart, copy the xpi file from ~/.mozilla/seamonkey.xxxxxx.default/extensions, then uninstall the add-on.
It is tedious to find the given extension because the extensions are renamed to numbers under the extensions directory, eg: {e84f2cf7-7745-4be8-89d4-1549d97ca45c}.xpi To find the given extension I have to check the rdf file for each extensions and it can take a long time if several extension are installed.
if you are worried about the add-on reporting back to big brother, disconnect from the internet as soon as you have completed the download.
I don't care about this at the moment. Is there any way to find/make show the xpi download link in seamonkey? What Felix writes, to use a different browser for downloading the xpi file, is a usable workaqround, though. Istvan Sorry to say so, but why do you insist that it should work with Seamonkey, where it doesn't and still refuse to try what others suggest. openSUSE nor it's community can do anything about this. Mozilla can. And IMNSHO that's where you should go. Simply search for their bug reporting URL, report the issue. Otherwise use FF, like described by others.

Do you see these links in seamonkey web browser? Which version?
Yep. Sadly a rather dusty version which I've locked down with UMatrix and more quite nicely (some would say I'm paranoid[1] ;) Which is why I got a rather bleak "black on grey with blue links and that's it"-version of the page ;) Moving the mouse over the links, I easily found the direct link to the actual .xpi ;) Oh, mompl... Got an almost current 2.49.er version as well. Hm. Some stuff of my copied profile makes it barf and dump core. (I guess I should check that or start with a new profile) ;) Ok, for this check though, safe-mode suffices and works. Ahh, I see, in default safe-mode, I get what you described (i.e. the "Only with FF .." Buttons)... Yep, that's it: Just disable JS and you'll get a nice green "Download Now" button beside each version, with the one beside 0.99.12 linking to (if you hover over it/copy the link), *tada*: https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/downloads/file/722227/screengrab_fix_vers... And just ignore those that don't get that version 2.x does not work with seamonkey (as exemplified by the missing "sm" in the link for https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/downloads/file/733683/screengrab_fix_vers... Actually, it's all due to this dain-bramage (with JS enabled): ==== <div class="install-shell"> <div class="install " data-addon="355813" data-icon="https://addons.cdn.mozilla.net/user-media/addon_icons/355/355813-32.png?modi..." data-developers="/en-US/firefox/addon/screengrab-fix-version/developers" data-versions="/en-US/firefox/addon/355813/versions/" data-name="Screengrab!" data-min="4.0" data-max="56.*" data-is-compatible-by-default="false" data-is-compatible-app="true" data-compat-overrides="[]"> <p class="install-button"> <a class="button download CTA" data-hash="sha256:3b754dac2f2ea1cf36da4d4d1973dfc6d8fcabcae6834b9008702f04409ddf3c" href="https://www.mozilla.org/firefox/new/?scene=2&utm_source=addons.mozilla.org&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=non-fx-button#download-fx">Only with Firefox ~ Get Firefox Now!</a> <span class="download-anyway "><a href="https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/downloads/file/722227/type:attachment/scr..." download="">Download Anyway</a></span> </p> </div> </div> ==== As you can see, the actual link to the .xpi is still there at the end, which is what one gets without JS, but that is replaced by that FF stuff if JS is enabled. Bloody idjit effers at mozilla. I HATE the FF UI! [Note: I've not found _ONE_ other modern GUI browser besides SM to have an acceptable UI, FF is actually somewhat useable of sorts if you're in a pinch.] Seamonkey with Prefbar, UMatrix, Scriptish (aka GreaseMonkey / UserMonkey) ruled! Sadly, Prefbar was not ported. It's soooo convenient to just add a checkbox to prefbar for e.g. JS, CSS, broken SSL/TLS ciphers for broken sites, or dropdowns for language, UA and window-size... and whatever else you might want to toggle/change in about:config and more. ONCE AGAIN: Only enable (whitelist) JS and stuff _IF YOU REALLY HAVE TO_... bit the bullet to a small degree.
OK, did you read what I wrote in my original post?
you can get the xpi file and retain it locally. initiate installing the add-on in seamonkey. it will dl the xpi file and request you restart seamonkey to complete the install.
When I visit the download page
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/screengrab-fix-version/versio...
with my seamonkey web browser I cannot find any download link to
the
xpi files. I see only big green buttons with the message "Only with Firefox
I just did that. There's a ton of versions linked, e.g.:
https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/downloads/file/722227/type:attachment/scr...
Do you see these links in seamonkey web browser? Which version?
Yep. Sadly a rather dusty version which I've locked down with UMatrix and more quite nicely (some would say I'm paranoid[1] ;)
Which is why I got a rather bleak "black on grey with blue links and that's it"-version of the page ;) Moving the mouse over the links, I easily found the direct link to the actual .xpi ;)
Oh, mompl...
Yep, that's it: Just disable JS and you'll get a nice green "Download Now" button beside each version, with the one beside 0.99.12 linking to (if you hover over it/copy the link), *tada*:
https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/downloads/file/722227/screengrab_fix_vers...
Thanks!!! Thank for reading what I wrote and answering my question, which helped to solve the problem. Only you and Felix wrote anything that had sense regarding the original question.
And just ignore those that don't get that version 2.x does not work with seamonkey (as exemplified by the missing "sm" in the link for
https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/downloads/file/733683/screengrab_fix_vers...
I did know that it (version 0.99.12) worked because I'd had it installed previously in seamonkey - and it worked.
Actually, it's all due to this dain-bramage (with JS enabled):
==== <div class="install-shell"> <div class="install " data-addon="355813"
data-icon="https://addons.cdn.mozilla.net/user-media/addon_icons/355/355813-32.png?modi..."
data-developers="/en-US/firefox/addon/screengrab-fix-version/developers" data-versions="/en-US/firefox/addon/355813/versions/" data-name="Screengrab!" data-min="4.0" data-max="56.*" data-is-compatible-by-default="false" data-is-compatible-app="true" data-compat-overrides="[]"> <p class="install-button"> <a class="button download CTA"
data-hash="sha256:3b754dac2f2ea1cf36da4d4d1973dfc6d8fcabcae6834b9008702f04409ddf3c"
href="https://www.mozilla.org/firefox/new/?scene=2&utm_source=addons.mozilla.org&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=non-fx-button#download-fx">Only with Firefox ~ Get Firefox Now!</a> <span class="download-anyway "><a
href="https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/downloads/file/722227/type:attachment/scr..." download="">Download Anyway</a></span> </p> </div>
</div> ====
As you can see, the actual link to the .xpi is still there at the end, which is what one gets without JS, but that is replaced by that FF stuff if JS is enabled.
OK, I see.
Bloody idjit effers at mozilla. I HATE the FF UI!
[Note: I've not found _ONE_ other modern GUI browser besides SM to have an acceptable UI, FF is actually somewhat useable of sorts if you're in a pinch.]
I refuse to use any browser which has google chrome-like interface, including google chrome/chromium, firefox > 29.x (australlis ui) etc. Mostly I use palemoon which also kept/keeps legacy ui layout and Seamonkey.
Seamonkey with Prefbar, UMatrix, Scriptish (aka GreaseMonkey / UserMonkey) ruled!
I don't know these but I will check them.
ONCE AGAIN: Only enable (whitelist) JS and stuff _IF YOU REALLY HAVE TO_...
How do I whitelist/blacklist sites for JS in Seamonkey? I know how to enable/disable JS in preferences but it is quite tedious to change it. Old opera (12.x) had a button for switching JS on/off, and it could added to the toolbar
If you'd followed that maxime, we'd not have had this thread ;)

Prefbar sadly only works with the old XUL-Extension-API...
ONCE AGAIN: Only enable (whitelist) JS and stuff _IF YOU REALLY HAVE TO_...
How do I whitelist/blacklist sites for JS in Seamonkey?
By using NoScript / UMatrix to generally block all JS and then whitelist those sites that one uses regularly (and then only those scripts that are actually needed, i.e. no trackers, no ads etc.). With UMatrix you can also allow/block cookies, images, CSS, AJAX, frames and other stuff in a matrix on a server-level. It's a bit "overwhelming" at first glance, but it's quite practical once you understood the basic principle.
I know how to enable/disable JS in preferences but it is quite tedious to change it. Old opera (12.x) had a button for switching JS on/off, and it could added to the toolbar
Prefbar has (had) a prefabbed checkbox for JS, cookies, images, and more ;) And even if not it was easy to add stuff. HTH, -dnh -- I believe the technical term is "Oops!" -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

close seamonkey and then copy the <name>.xpi file from below ~/.mozilla/seamonkey.xxxxxx.default/extensions/staged
or if it installs immediately instead of requesting a restart, copy the xpi file from ~/.mozilla/seamonkey.xxxxxx.default/extensions, then uninstall the add-on.
It is tedious to find the given extension because the extensions are renamed to numbers under the extensions directory, eg:
{e84f2cf7-7745-4be8-89d4-1549d97ca45c}.xpi
To find the given extension I have to check the rdf file for each extensions and it can take a long time if several extension are installed.
if you are worried about the add-on reporting back to big brother, disconnect from the internet as soon as you have completed the download.
I don't care about this at the moment.
Is there any way to find/make show the xpi download link in seamonkey?
What Felix writes, to use a different browser for downloading the xpi file, is a usable workaqround, though.

I know this is a bit old, but recovering from an email prob and saw it. I've had same problem. Goto bottom of the extension's page and look for previous versions -- the first previous version should be the current one. There they have them listed as normal links. I rt-click on it and choose download. Hope that helps. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org
