Hi, I have 2 workstations with identical hardware running the same setup with SuSE 9.0. The one runs perfect, the other just switches off at random. Is there is hardware testing suite available for testing all the components and finding the cuprit? I've used Memtest - and it does not seem to be memory. Thanks Nico

Just had one this past week, puzzling my hair out of my head. Do run memtest86 thoroughly (overnight). Does it stop or reboot? I found out that this was the cause on my PC: http://www.theregister.co.uk/2003/02/06/stolen_formula_torpedos_big_brand/ Replaced 4 elcaps on the mobo, problem solved. Mind you the article speaks about 2002, my experience is, that it already happens on mobo's from 1999-2000. This one was the second I have repaired for this.

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2003/02/06/stolen_formula_torpedos_big_brand/ sounds like my 1989 Lincoln radio. When I took the radio to a repair shop, the person there said they wouldn't even touch those radios any more because of a bad run of electrolytic capacitors

Hardware diagnotics only go so far, and I don't think they'll likely find your problem. You'll have to start monitoring points in your power supply or power control section of the mom board. A few more clues might also help. For example, does it just suddenly die? Is there any warning? Any particular activity?

The one I use had a defective power connector on the back of the PC and because of that, the unit would switch off at random.

With two identical PCs, I think I'd start swapping between the two at this point. Not the fastest way to troubleshoot, but it should work. Start with the RAM and processor, then the cards, and finaly the power suply etc.. At some point your problem should "move" to the other PC. -- Louis D. Richards LDR Interactive Technologies

Maybe something to check : my laptop did shut down under heavy load, eventually I found out the ventilator of the CPU stopped running. -- Met vriendelijke groeten, Koenraad Lelong R&D Manager ACE electronics n.v.

Shall I ask which laptop is that? Is that a Dell Inspiron 5000 by any chances? Sergio -- MSDOS didn't get as bad as it is overnight -- it took over ten years of careful development. -- dmeggins@aix1.uottawa.ca

Sergio No, it wasn't. It's a Gericom, but this doesn't mean that the Dell can't behave the same. -- Met vriendelijke groeten, Koenraad Lelong R&D Manager ACE electronics n.v.

It should be obvious that there is a problem with your analysis. If they are identical, including setup, then they should be doing identical things. Trouble shooting 101: #1 - What is different.
