RE: [SLE] Cannot install 8.0
Hi, I have experienced some of the same problems. While I had not any problems installing 7.1 and 7.3 and booting on CD/DVDs, 8.0 seems to be very picky on the hardware setup or BIOS something somewhere. Because of the Pioneer problem 8.0 would not boot on my DVD at all, so I had to use the CD's. My partial solution was to go into the BIOS and set the PIO mode for the CD-ROM to 0. Then I escaped the red dialog box saying 'Error occured...', when YasT rebooted after installing about 400 of 700 packages. Then the packages from CD1 was installed, but YaST did not ask for CD 2 or 3 so I had to install some packages after the installation had finished, among them Koffice. After that I was able to get the system back and running. Since you dual-boot you might also check where Lilo is installed, and if Grub or some Windows bootloader is causing problems for the installation. Hope this wil be some help for you... ===== Original Message From Michael Norman <michaeltnorman@yahoo.com> ===== Hi all
I really do hope somebody can offer me any help at all with this. I apologise in advance for the length of this post. Please bear with me.
I have been using SuSE since 6.1 I have never had insurmiountable problems before either installing or using any version up until now with 8.0. I have a p111 800 with 392 meg ram, a voodoo 2 3000 video card two ide hard drives, a relysis dvd drive and a hp cdrw drive. I am dual booting SuSE 7.3 and W98. I got as usual the 8.0 pro update a couple of weeks ago. I keep test partitions (boot and root) where I always test run any new version. When I got 8.0 I could not get any successful install, I tried every option, both from dvd and cd and using both cd and dvd drives and all ended in different failures. Packages failed, or I got the red screen "some error occurred" I retraced my steps and reinstalled 7.3 into the test partitions. It worked fine. So I concluded it wasn't a hardware problem and rang SuSE Uk who agreed to send me another set of discs. They arrived today and I still have the same problems, ie I cannot get a fresh install to work, wxactly the same problems ocur, following every possible combination of dvd, cd and from either dvd or cdrw drive. I tried setting pio to ) in bios as recommnded here http://sdb.suse.de/cz/sdb/html/errorinst.html but it made no difference.
The only way I can get 8.0 installed is to do a test install of 7.3 and upgrade it, but even that is toortuus and needs several runs to recover packages that don't get installed properly.
Can anybody suggest anything more I can try, or do I have to forget about 8.0 ?
Mike

Hi I can boot from the dvd but all of the variuos install methods seem to end in failure of one sort or another, mainly dropping packages after about one third in, hanging at some point or the red "some error" screen. Setting PIO to 0 in BIOS made no difference. The cds work slightly better than the dvd in the same dvd drive (Relysis) but not reliably enogh to complete an install. Using the cds in my HP cdrw drive throughs up less errors still but I've still not been able to complete an install. I did try doing a trial install of 7.3 into different partitions than my main 7.3 set up and upgrading that to 8.0 using the cds in th cdrw. It seemed to work once but when I eventually rebooted to it I got kernel error messages including an oops and a kernel panic. At this point and after manay many hours of aborted installations I gave up and deleted the lot. LILO is on the mbr by the way and when I do a test install I add the new kernel using my main set up. Usually works. Mike I'll need to do the fresh 7.3 update to 8.0 again and log all the errors and post back. --- Jostein Berntsen <jostber@online.no> wrote:
