I recently upgraded my SuSE 6.2 install to 6.3. I never really tried playing mp3's before this, however now I am having serious playback problem using mpg123 and xmms. I compiled mpg123 and I seem to have the most control over it. However the problem appears to based on sampling and I can't completely GET it. Xmms is an entirely different story. I can not get it in the ball-park at all. I thought that the problem could be based in part on a bad mp3 source so I ripped and encoded my own from this system. Playback was still bad. If that weren't bad enough, I was able to move the file to my redhat machine and it played perfectly under xmms. Currently, my sound is configured properly. I can do anything with sound other then play mp3's. I can even use the cd plug-in under xmms and play standard audio cd's without any problem whatsoever. I have searched through the support database and I seem to be the only person having any problems of this nature. Short of removing all mp3 related problems and their associate libraries and re-installing I'm at a loss. If anyone could give me any guidance on where to turn next I would greatly appreciate it. I once had a simlair problem to this. I had my system sound mixer turned all the way up and my sound card was giving off allot of 'power' to my powered speakers and it sounded like junk. Try turning the system volume down, either use aumix (Command line/Cursers) or kvolume (KDE) to adjust the volume. It took me probably 2 days to firgure this out, and it was so simple. Check it, if this is not the problem, then no harm done, right? Also another tip I have learned, under a busy system some times the mp3 player can't 'pull' the song off hard drive fast enough because it is busy doing other things. All the mp3 players I have seen can be passed a 'buffer' option, just give it a huge buffer (I ussually give it 4-6 megs, about the size of the average song) and the music shouldn't break up since the whole song is in RAM. (This assumes you have enough RAM in the system to spare a little for sound quality purposes.)
