[opensuse] Updating VirtualBox
I elected to delete the previous version (v2.2.1) and then reinstall
v2.2.4, which was probably unnecessary bother.
After removing the older version with rpm -e <filename>, when I attempted
to install the new one, I received the following error message:
*****
No precompiled module for this kernel found -- trying to build one.
Messages emitted during module compilation will be logged
to /var/log/vbox-install.log.
Compilation of the kernel module FAILED! VirtualBox will not start until
this problem is fixed. Please consult /var/log/vbox-install.log to find
out why the kernel module does not compile. Most probably the kernel
sources are not found. Install them and execute
/etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup
as root.
insserv: script lpd: service cupsd already provided!
*****
Inspecting the log entry, on the other hand, tells me a similar, but
different, story:
*****
** Compiling vboxdrv
Makefile:172: *** Error: unable to find the include directory for your
current Linux kernel. Specify KERN_INCL=<directory> and run Make again.
Stop.
*****
These are two different diagnoses. Furthermore, in each of the
suggestions, there are things I don't know how to do:

Have you installed kernel-headers?
kernel-headers is indeed present. But the VirtualBox User Manual, mentions that file only for Ubuntu and Debian. On the other hand, what is mentioned for openSuSE are kernel-source and kernel-syms, and the latter of these was missing. Thank you for pointing me in the right direction, which would have been difficult for me to find from the error message and the log entry that I was given.

In general kernel-headers are used to compile applications, For any modules you need headers in current kernel-sources. So far I recall message from factory ML with 11.2 there will be kernel-devel package that is much smaller and it will contain all files necessary to compile modules. -- Regards, Rajko http://news.opensuse.org/category/people-of-opensuse/ -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I am also confused about the question about the kernel module. There was no such err when I installed the preceding version. I see in YaST that there is a short list of kernel modules for the ose version of VirtualBox, but what I have here is what I downloaded from the Sun site.
Why didn't you install the buildservice version of virtual box, also at 2.2.4 version, which would probably have installed the kernel modules needed? - -- Cheers, Carlos E. Do you mean the version that is on YaST? I knew about that, but I had recommendations here on this forum suggesting that I prefer the full version (not the freebie) on the program's website. The one that one gets through the repository is the freebie. Probably it wouldn't make much difference for me, since I don't plan to be a big user of the WinXP that intend to install as a vm, but that is the reason that I did what I did. -- Stan Goodman Qiryat Tiv'on Israel -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Ah, I see. I use vmware myself, I wasn't aware of that "detail".

Well, I don't know what differences they will have, but I suppose the version on the repo is easier to install. - -- Cheers, Carlos E. USB support most likely. It's not in the version in the repo.
