NOW, my question is "what does the proxy do for me?" If I can get to the net without it, why not? It seems to me that it is just one less machine to go though to get to the net. Can you shed some light on this?
The main advantage of HTTP proxies is, that they usaly cache the reqested pages. If you request a page that another user (using the same proxie) reqested before, the proxy will send it's copy to you if there is no new version of it in the original server. So the proxy speed up things for you and reduces the overall traffic on the internet.
