Hi Ralph, What I do find astonishing is, that your fstab does not include a /boot partition. I was told, that you must have a /boot partition (it can be small, on my box it is e.g. only 15.2 MB) as ext2fs, otherwise (using ONLY reiserfs) you would run into difficulties. I never dared to ignore this:-) And never had troubles as described by you:-) Cheers ..... Wolfi ============================================= mailto:wolfi_z@gmx.net

To make it more complete, the other way is to compile a kernel which includes reiserfs. If you want to load reiserfs as a module, you need the /boot partition mentioned before. Cheers .... Wolfi ============================================= mailto:wolfi_z@gmx.net

That's not true! By default, SuSE puts the reiserfs module directly in the ramdisk (initd). No need for a /boot partition for that! - -- Thibaut Cousin email : cousin@in2p3.fr web : http://clrwww.in2p3.fr -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.0.6 (GNU/Linux) Comment: For info see http://www.gnupg.org iD8DBQE9nVEWv1vqsTa1E4oRArBmAKCVxnDACYi6a+pwjwTyzW52/129ZACfaLNb JyYo4ek9/5Ly+DDFNzfOvY0= =ScB2 -----END PGP SIGNATURE-----

If it's that way, I wonder why SuSE creates /boot if left alone doing a clean install at its own discretion? (still in SuSE 8.1!) **???** Cheers .... Wolfi ============================================= mailto:wolfi_z@gmx.net

/boot is necessary for old/buggy bios. I guess there are still enough of those to be careful... SuSE is supposed to be installable even on old machines like pentium I or II. - -- Thibaut Cousin email : cousin@in2p3.fr web : http://clrwww.in2p3.fr -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.0.6 (GNU/Linux) Comment: For info see http://www.gnupg.org iD8DBQE9nWSpv1vqsTa1E4oRAhUmAJ9ps7AV0kyj4wDrlFuL6iColY13CgCfc807 jdUcsIqtu0qZmB6dRjRNlHM= =qIUn -----END PGP SIGNATURE-----
I concurr. I have a little auxiliary instalation with suse 7.3, with only one reiser parttition, and the default kernel (ie, with reiserfs as module). I think the /boot partition was needed when initrd wasn't used. -- Cheers, Carlos Robinson El 02.10.04 a las 10:28, Thibaut Cousin escribió:

Does this also apply to ext3? -- Bob Rea mailto:gapetard@stsams.org http://www.petard.us Freedom is only privilege extended unless enjoyed by one and all --Billy Bragg
I don't have an answer to the original problem, but I want to address the other remarks:
What I do find astonishing is, that your fstab does not include a /boot partition. I was told, that you must have a /boot partition My box doesn't know that, so it's been happily working for over a year without a boot partition. the other way is to compile a kernel which includes reiserfs. Does this also apply to ext3? I have, over the past year, changed from ext3 to reiserfs, back to ext3, then to (currently) reiserfs, all the time without a boot partition.
AFAIK, the kernel (2.4.10 and higher) handles both ext3 and reiserfs without complaints. As of late, I have the system on one HD and the swap partition on another, without problems. -- Regards, gr (in /usually/ balmy, sunny Florida's Suncoast) [powered by SuSE-7.3 Linux 2.4.10]
