[SuSE Linux] putting SUSE on floppies for PC wo/CD-ROM ????
Is there a way to put SUSE on floppies to install on a PC that does not have a CD ROM ???? Have enough parts from my old 486 to put together another PC. I got a case at a Computer show for $17.00. The parts I have should be working and not in a box under my bed. ;-) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Mike Rushton mrushton@epix.net Some favorite Fallen Flag roads : D&H LV CNJ DL&W PNER The Laurel Line Some favorite fallen Collieries : Huber Harry E (Bucket of Blood) Sullivan Trail Prospect Railroad and Anthracite Homepage : <A HREF="http://www.geocities.com/SoHo/Lofts/6444</A">http://www.geocities.com/SoHo/Lofts/6444</A> <A HREF="http://NEPA.railfan.net</A">http://NEPA.railfan.net</A> NERAILANDCOAL mailing list <A HREF="http://www.onelist.com/subscribe.cgi/nerrandcoal</A">http://www.onelist.com/subscribe.cgi/nerrandcoal</A> -------------------------------------------------------------------------- -- To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e Check out the SuSE-FAQ at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A">http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A> and the archive at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A">http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A>

you can do a few things.. 1 "make" the drive on another machine (remove and replace it) 2 install a network card (like a lynksys) and do a local cdrom install This is a good learning experience however if the machine dosnt have a cdrom it will be challanged in the future. read (pita) you also want to be sure the A: is bootable.. if not you'll be removing the drive more than you care to. you could also look for another ide cable in the box and get an old cdrom set up as a slave. have fun rob -- LInux Home Page <A HREF="http://www.connix.com/~dizzy73/LBM.htm</A">http://www.connix.com/~dizzy73/LBM.htm</A> S.u.S.E Linux 5.3 -IRC- #suse efnet Home Linux Box S.u.S.E List Archive <A HREF="http://members.xoom.com/dizzy73/list.htm</A">http://members.xoom.com/dizzy73/list.htm</A>

Nope , if you have some spare network cards , oinstall them , then copy the first cd to you hard drive , reboot with the install disk and chose install from a directry. That will install the basic services. The isntall will croak when ti gets to the other diskes. simmly reboot , and copy the next cd , then restart the insytall. Or install the network cards , then choose network install and piont it to any server wiyth a cdrom drive. That way you can swap out the cds. You will need the machines ip and cdrom path. Thirdly , just rip out a cdrom and plug it in for the install then remove it. At 02:53 PM 6/27/1999 -0400, mrushton wrote:

you can have a hard time as well and use a plip (paralel port ip) device as a network device on both machines and install via NFS / ftp. As far as I remember, this is supported by the boot disk. But this requires a few HOWTOS and a few more hours reading them. Two NICŽs or swapping a CD ROM might be more fun, but less exitement.
