Hi, I need to correct these instructions. There's a serious flaw To install this new release via the YaST installer mechanism, follow this general procedure:
1) Launch the YaST Control Center: KDE Launch Menut -> System -> YaST. 2) Click "Change Source of Installation" 3) Click "Add" and seelct "FTP..." from the pop-up menu that appears. 4) In the resulting dialog, add the server name "ftp.gwdg.de" and the directory name
"/pub/linux/suse/ftp.suse.com/suse/i386/supplementary/KDE/update_for_9.1/yast-source"
and click "OK". Once the YaST software confirms the suitability of this network location as a source for installation you'll be back in the YaST Control Center. 5) Click "Install and Remove Software" 6) From the "Filter:" pop-up menu in the upper-left of the installer window, choose "Package Groups". 7) Scroll down to the "System" category and expand it (click the little plus sign) and then similarly expand the "GUI" category and click "KDE"
Up to here, everything is OK (as far as I can tell...). However, this part:
Now in the list on the upper right you'll see all the packages in this group. Many of these packages will be shown in blue and should have check-marks in the box at the left. Scroll if necessary to the right to see the version numbers. The checked / blue packages should show a newer version number than the installed version (if any) and in many cases (though not necessarily all) those version numbers will be 3.3.0-n.
... is seriously flawed. Let me try again: The blue entries are those for which a newer version is availble. However, as shown, those packages _will not_ be updated. To get all the newer packages installed: 8) Select the menu command Packge -> All in This List -> Update if Newer Version Available. After doing this, you'll see green/black lightening bolt icons in the packages that have been superceded by the KDE 3.3 release and which will be updated if you proceed.
Now, if you want to install KDE 3.3, click the "Accept" button in the lower right corner of the window.

I tried the instructions given. But when I click on 'Accept' I get about
a million dependancy conflicts. They all seem to boil down to
'libjack.so' not being available.
Any ideas how to proceed?

Install the jack-0.94.0-71 package from your SuSE Linux 9.1 CD. (That is, I assume you have 9.1) -Ti

I exchanged some mails with Mike Fabian (mfabian on suse people) about the issue. The problem, from his words, is: "I believe the problem is that freetype 2.1.9 is not completely binary compatible to 2.1.7. As far as I know, it is binary compatible as far as the public API is concerned, but unfortunately some applications used internal freetype functions which have been changed. I.e. that is most likely a bug in the KDE fontinstaller, it shouldn't have used private freetype functions. As the above problem doesn't occur on the current development version of SuSE where all the KDE libraries are compiled against freetype 2.1.9, I think it is likely that the problem would go away on SuSE 9.1 if the programs causing problems were recompiled against freetype 2.1.9. Unfortunately this isn't easy for you and I also cannot easily supply updated versions of all KDE libraries." You can revert to the old freetype libraries. I,ve down graded freetype to version 2.1.7 using apt and Kfontinstaller works now.

Can you explain why my SuSE 9.1 Pro upgraded to KDE 3.2.3 and thence to 3.3.0 has a much older version of FreeType installed? % rpm -q freetype freetype-1.3.1-1150 I have not experienced any font-related problems, by the way. Randall Schulz

Might be a good thing too Richard they don't get it. If someone uses Mozilla/Mail on their machines and tend to print pages from those, you will experience problems with the last two 1.8 version builds. Firefox does not exhibit the same behavior when freetype2-2.1.9 is installed and still prints ok. I haven't noticed any other problems using the 2.1.9 version yet, just Mozilla/mail. Alternatively: 7) Click on the zzz All entry at the bottom of the list 8) Scroll the package pane across till you see "Avail. Ver." and click once on this header. Now packages are sorted in this order: red: a more recent version is installed than is available in a source (this happens with security updates) blue: a newer package is available black: up to date. 9) I usually use the numeric keypad + key to select, and move to the next one. This lets me get an idea of what packages are going in.
