I recently tried to do a fresh install of 8.1 Professional from the install CDs. The install process appeared to go normally (no obvious error messages), although I noticed that the install CD contained an older version of the nVidia driver for my GeForce4 video card. After the install completed, I tried to boot the system. The boot went normally until late in the boot process when the screen flickers and the video driver starts. At that point, the boot process stopped and the screen went black. I tried to boot the system several times but ran into the same problem. (I finally gave up and installed 8.0, which which booted successfully.) Has anyone experienced this problem with 8.1 or know how to solve it? Thanks very much for your help!
Can you boot in rescue mode, one of the options you can choose during boot.

Thanks very much for the suggestion. I have already re-installed 8.0, but I will try booting in rescue mode (if necessary) in a couple weeks when I try to install 8.1 again. -- ______________________________________________ http://www.linuxmail.org/ Now with POP3/IMAP access for only US$19.95/yr Powered by Outblaze

I'm going to take a stab at helping because your problem sounds similar to mine :-) I installed 8.1 professional from scratch and the installation chose the wrong resolution for my monitor. I ran SAX2 to configure XWindows correctly. I have a couple of messages to this list that I hope someone can shed some light on. You might want to follow them or ask follow-up questions. I can tell you more about my experience. Does SuSE watch this list? I haven't enacted our support yet because I like to save it for something really serious. I did activate it in 7.1 and 7.3 and it didn't help. I found all SuSE support rather weak (ahhh, especially their online support database and email archive), but we're really small, and have found the user community much more knowledgeable. I usually can find someone that has had similar problems and are nice enough to share their experience and solution. Good Luck. -- __________________________ DJ mailto: linux_programmer@hotmail.com
