I am running a SuSE Linux fileserver and while I can access the shared folder from my Win2K machine, I cannot get into it from the Win98SE boxes. It shows the server, but when I select it from the list it asks for the password. But the prompt asks for the password to access \\fileserver\ipc$ and I am not sure what the ipc$ stands for. I have logged onto the Win98 system with the username and password of a user setup on the file server, but it still prompts for this. TIA Greg

I assume you are using samba. You must modify the registry in your Win98 machines to include "EnablePlainTextPassword = 1". Regards. - -- Alfredo J. IPC stands for interprocess communication and you typically have at least one IPC connection to every windows machine (actually to each SMB server). By default, WIn98 uses encrypted passwords with Samba does not. The quickest thing to do in enable plain text password on the Win98 machine. Run regedit and go to: HKYE_LOCAL_MACHINE -> System -> CurrentControlSet -> Services -> VxD -> VNETSUP Add a new binary variable called EnablePlainTextPassword and set it to 01. I think you will need to reboot to make it take effect. Regards, jimmo --------------------------------------- "Be more concerned with your character than with your reputation.
