I've upgraded my 9.1 to 9.3 and have noticed a marked slowdown (135 messages in Evolution now takes close to 25 minutes to retrieve on DSL, konqueror requires over 1 minute to come up on the screen). I did a new install for / with reiser 3.6 (default) and maintained my /home/* with reiser 3.5. KDE is also slow to load as well. Someone mentioned possible conflicts causing slowdowns in 9.3, how do I check if this is the case? Mike

Go into Evolution Settings==>mail prefs==>Junk tab and uncheck the check for junk selection. This is forcing all email through a local spam checker which is why it is slow. -- Ken Schneider UNIX since 1989, linux since 1994, SuSE since 1998 "The day Microsoft makes something that doesn't suck is probably the day they start making vacuum cleaners." -Ernst Jan Plugge

And that will fix the "konqueror requires over 1 minute to come up on the screen" problem, How? The OP needs to find out where all the cycles are going. Is the proper kernel installed for the hardware? Are unnecessary services installed that weren't there in 9.1? What does top indicate? -- _____________________________________ John Andersen

It won't. He stated "messages in Evolution now takes close to 25 minutes to retrieve on DSL", it was meant as a possible solution for his email problem using evolution. konquerer is another matter. Perhaps you can help with that problem.
The OP needs to find out where all the cycles are going. Is the proper kernel installed for the hardware? Are unnecessary services installed that weren't there in 9.1? What does top indicate?

Should be, stock x86 kernel at install time.
Are unnecessary services installed that weren't there in 9.1?
I checked the run level editor, disabled nfs and smbfs client services (the server isn't always on, and I can restart these later if needed.) There was a broadcast dns deamon running that I'm not sure about, and a name caching deamon as well. The system is mot a server or router but a stand alone box on a home network.

Dont worry about kbear, its not your problem. In fact nothing
is your problem, the machine is not using any cpu time at all.
This sounds like a net problem.
Post your /etc/hosts file. I suspect either a routing problem
or the machine does not know how to reach itself. (There are
a lot of things in unix that use tcp sockets to talk to other
processes in the same machine.
Your hosts should look something like this:
127.0.0.1 localhost
127.0.0.1

That's fine. All 127.x.x.x addresses resolve to your local machine. Which one is chosen is just aesthetics Do you get anything interesting in /var/log/messages or $HOME/.xsession-errors ?

What does this last line do? This is the actual machine I'm on, but it;s .2 not .1?
That's fine. All 127.x.x.x addresses resolve to your local machine. Which one is chosen is just aesthetics

Thanks Ken, I did that just now. 30 minutes for 90 messages really sucks.
