[SLE] Status of the 3C905C network adaptor
Hi, I'm going to buy a 100 Mbps network adaptor to a SMP machine. I'm considering 3Com's 3C905C. Is it a good choice or should I buy something else? (What?) Why do I ask: 3C905B-TX is listed in the SuSE HW database as problematic. The new driver 3c90x.c from 3Com (http://support.3com.com/infodeli/tools/nic/linuxdownload.htm) is supposed to support both 3C905B and 3C905C. It indicates there may be problems with 3C905C as well. I intend to use the 3c90x.c driver with SuSE 7.0. I've tried to compile it under SuSE 6.3, but the compilation via compile_SMP failed due to undefined symbols. When I added #define CONFIG_X86_LOCAL_APIC #include <asm/fixmap.h> #include <asm/i82489.h> to 3c90x.h the compilation went OK, but I have no idea if the driver works or not. Does anybody use this adaptor on a heavy loaded SMP machine? -- Alexandr.Malusek@imv.liu.se -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/support/faq

I don't know if you've already gone out and bought one or not, but if I were you I wouldn't. I have tried a few of these cards in my time - some cards work and some don't. I would suggest just about any other card from a major manufacturer, including 3Com. FWIW: I have been using a close relative - 3Com's 3C905-B - network adaptor on an HP Vectra XU 5/90C for several weeks. It appears to work OK. I beleive the driver in use is 3C59x.c v0.99H (I am a network newbie). Regards, Charles Bowman SuSE v. 6.1 Kernel: 2.2.5 On Sat, 30 Sep 2000, Chris Reeves wrote:
