Problems exporting display
I am trying to pipe the display of one machine to another. I ssh into server from workstation and attempt to export servers display to workstation as such: #export DISPLAY=workstation:0.0 on workstation I use xhost to open the display as such: user@workstation:~>xhost + server or just xhost + to open it wide. However, I still get: # yast2 y2controlcenter: cannot connect to X server workstation:0.0 I have only had this problem on SuSE 9.1 but it is common to 3 different machines. I have tried to Google and search the archives for an answer but have not found one. Any ideas? TIA, Darrell Cormier

Does ssh -X root@server /sbin/yast2 not serve your needs? Cheers, Leen

Thanks for the response. For most cases this works. However, some of our servers don't have ssh and I have to use rlogin instead. The example I gave using yast2 was just one example. Maybe I can talk our sys admin into putting ssh on the servers that don't have it. If anyone else made a response will you please resend it. My ISP had a mail server problem and it looks like I have lost all list mail since yesterday around noon CST. Sorry if this comes through twice. thanks, Darrell C.

With ssh, you don't have to export DISPLAY. Just use ssh -X

If "ssh -X root@server" doesn't work for some reason, try first connecting using the same user on both machines - try "xclock" to test your X connection. When it works, just use "sux" to become root with 'X powers' :-) IIRC, xhost open connection from other machines to the same user; in the last year, all distros I had used changed those permissions to a more restritive set... I remember doing "X :1 --query <machine with old RH>" in a console and being able to login remotely through gdm... :-) -- Marcos Lazarini

X (and xhost) doesn't know or care about users, it only sees the X authentication scheme. But the "problem" in 9.1 is that X doesn't listen to network connections at all I agree with the other posters, use ssh
