Hi All, I have a situation in that my notebook won't boot from an external USB HardDisk, and it does not have a floppy drive. What I wish to do, is install linux (any flavour as long as I can use XFCE), on the external drive but boot up via CD. I don't want anything written to the MBR of the notebook internal harddrive.
I'm sure someone has either done this, or knows how to. Any help would be appreciated. I've been "googling" it for a bit, but still haven't found a proper method.
Thanks

There is a issue of the British Linux Rag called Linux Format that has several mini-distros as well as a few of the newer distros such as SlackZip that would install in a properly sized (128M) USB Thumbdrive. You can also look at www.linuxgazette.com , the online version of Linux Journal and see several articles regarding Linux install onto USB drives. There are also new versions of Knoppix that use USB Drives for whenever you want to save your /home directories and settings. The newer ones also take advantage of the multi-session capability of a USB cd burner and then you write it back onto the CD. FYI. Thanks Adam, but my external USB drive is 250 gigs, so I was looking for a more permanent install and a method for comfortably trying out new distro's without "messsing" with my internel drive on the notebook. Regards, -- SyapseR

Try the "live DVD/CD" for testing. No installation required. As long as you have more than 256M of ram. There are many different distros that have live versions. And they don't touch your hard drive. -- Ken Schneider UNIX since 1989, linux since 1994, SuSE since 1998 "The day Microsoft makes something that doesn't suck is probably the day they start making vacuum cleaners." -Ernst Jan Plugge
