[opensuse] Kindle for PC via WINE ?
Anyone had any luck getting "Kindle for PC" to run on OpenSuse via WINE ? There are several internet posts that reference a minor "tweak" to wine (essentially changing the winecfg to windows98 ) and "Kindle for PC" supposedly works fine. I've done the the winecfg tweak on both my OpenSuse 11.2 desktop and my Ubuntu laptop with similar results. The "Kindle for PC" program appears to install, an Icon shows up on the desktop, but when the icon is clicked - it tries to launch but crashes. -- Regis Matejcik Crescent Construction Company www.CrescentConstruction.com -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

If all you want is an eReader for your pc, look at Calibre. It can convert the various formats to whatever you like, catalog your books, and has a built in ereader. It's free and has an easy one line installer. You can find it here: http://calibre-ebook.com/download_linux. Thanks Richard, My initial reaction was that it probably wouldn't work. My motivation was that being lazy, cheap, and impatient . . . the idea of getting a newly released book almost instantly, at a discounted price, without leaving my desk was appealing. But not so appealing if I had to buy a new gadget (kindle) and I couldn't read it on my desktop or laptop. But . . . The kindle blackberry app works great - so I can buy from the blackberry. And surprisingly calibre handles the kindle format with no problem. So . . . All I have to do is buy with the blackberry, send the file to dropbox and voila - new book at blackberry, desktop, and laptop! cool. great suggestion! thanks again, Regis -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Sorry, but Calibre will neither READ nor CONVERT DRM protected books. So forget it for Amazon. I see no reason Kindle reader wouldn't work under Wine. It does nothing special, and since its free, perhaps the OP should try it and see. -- _____________________________________ At one time I had a Real Sig. Yeah, I feel slightly "tricked". Yesterday I downloaded a "sample" of the book I was considering buying via the BlackBerry Kindle app. I put the "sample" ebook file in the dropbox and went to calibre to view it. It worked perfectly. So, like an idiot, I bought the ebook via blackberry, put the file in dropbox and then went to calibre to open it. I got the message "This book protected by drm" with a giant red X. So now I already dumped 15 bucks on a book I can only read on my BlackBerry - unless I can break the drm or get Kindle for PC to work under WINE. I agree it seems it should work under WINE, and it shows up as installed in my applications menu under Wine; and if I right click the ebook file I get an option in the dropdown menu open with ->Amazon Kindle for PC Application. Seems that Amazon could have written a linux version since the Kindle is a linux device. go figure. thanks, Regis -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Hi Regis,

-- Regards Rajko,
That's the "tweak" I referenced in the original post. The same article is in numerous places. It essentially says to modify the winecfg to win98 for the Kindle program. I tried it. It didn't work for me. For fun I tried it in the rest of the settings also. In searching some other forums, it seems that since the first release of the desktop app, Amazon has released a later version that isn't so "wine friendly". thanks, Regis -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I tried with yesterdays updated Wine package (1.2rc2 aka 1.1.45_1.2rc2) and it is able to access my Kindle stuff. (and I am able to browse the Freakonomics book I bought ;) add the Wine repo: http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/Emulators:/Wine/openSUSE_11.2/ (replace 11.2 by 11.1 if you are using 11.1) Ciao, Marcus -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Thanks for the suggestion Marcus, I had high hopes, but same results. When you say "access my Kindle stuff" do you mean by using "Kindle for PC" available from Amazon ? Or browsing a Kindle via USB ? or perhaps something else? If it's with "Kindle for PC" can you share which version? I've spent a good deal of time now researching this subject, and it seems that the "Kindle for PC - Beta" version ran almost perfectly under Wine, but the final and current release do not. I've searched extensively for a copy of the old Beta release - but it seems that Amazon has searched equally well in making sure it's not available. Ok, I've found an old "Kindle for PC" beta version at: http://www.blogsdna.com/5575/read-kindle-books-on-your-computer-with-amazon-... I downloaded it, used wincfg to change the default settings to windows98, then used command line to launch and it works perfectly. Connected to my amazon account, downloaded the book I thought I wasted 15 bucks on, and it looks great. Now I'm a bit conflicted, I really like the idea of buying newly released books cheaper, faster, and being able to access them via desktop, laptop and blackberry - but it really seems like they intentionally broke the ability to run under wine in the final versions. I'm having a hard time reconciling the idea of patronizing a company that runs its supposedly "proprietary device" on linux, then goes out of its way to exclude linux users. Oh well, for now I'm just glad it works. Thanks, Regis -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I meant the Kindle for PC, I have the November 2009 version. (1.0 Beta 1 (25338), Last Updated November 15 2009, 09:56 AM) This program access the amazon kindle db (of your account), but not the reader device. The "Kindle Shop" link in the program just starts Firefox on Amazon ... You can just do this via Linux Firefox and the books you buy are transfered via 3G to the reader device without any .EXEs involved. The Kindle reader itself ... You can access it as mass storage device, you can copy (free) ebooks and PDFs on it just as like with any USB stick.
