SuSE 10 won't start after update with apt-get on 24 feb.
Hello, I have a problem with starting SuSE, yesterday I did a update with apt/get and after that the problems where there. When starting up it hangs on the point ""starting powersaved" or after that point. I have put back a image and did al the update's again, with the same problems after that. So there is a package that gave this problem, but witch one??? Are there more people with this problem?? And how to solve it? Thanks Gerrit Jan
I think I found the problem, it's Grub, with Lilo no problems. I think it have something to do with the kdebase3-kdm 3.5.1-27 update to. Grub won't save any more, Lilo works well. I had the same problem and solved it by downgrading kdebase3-kdm-3.5.1-27 to kdebase3-kdm-3.5.1-18. Francesco GJE wrote:

I also went back to kdebase3-kdm-3.5.1-18, but I have still problems with Grub, not with Lilo. GJ Op zaterdag 25 februari 2006 14:40, schreef Francesco Teodori:

I tried again. If I update to kdm-3.5.1-27, my system hangs at boot. After downgrading to kdm-3.5.1-18 my system boots without any problem. Try to downgrade also kdebase3-session to kdebase3-session-3.5.1-18 Francesco Gerrit Jan wrote:

Ok, it looks like we got a taste of 10.1 in our 10.0 setups! Gerrit, I'm not sure what you did, but LILO doesn't have a thing to do with this problem. How can a boot loader affect the booting so late in the process? Maybe you are just trying to get more people to use LILO? Anyway, it seems that Francesco is closer to the bug than you are. It has to do with the file /etc/init.d/earlykdm, installed by the new kdebase3 rpms, build -27. You can edit that file with the changes I'll indicate below to put things right using the -27 build rpms. Replace this: if test -z "$DISPLAYMANAGER_AUTOLOGIN"; then /sbin/preload /etc/preload.d/kdm else /usr/bin/ionice -n2 /sbin/preload /etc/preload.d/kdm.auto /usr/bin/ionice -n6 /sbin/preload /etc/preload.d/kde & echo $! > /var/run/preload-session.pid fi With this: if test -z "$DISPLAYMANAGER_AUTOLOGIN"; then /sbin/preload < /var/cache/preload/kdm.preload else /usr/bin/ionice -n2 /sbin/preload < /var/cache/preload/kdm.auto.preload /usr/bin/ionice -n6 /sbin/preload < /var/cache/preload/kde.preload & echo $! > /var/run/preload-session.pid fi regards, Lee

Lee, I have no problems with Lilo. The problem with Grub is that it won't save when conf. it. Thats why I use Lilo at this time. Don't no why Grub won't work? I can live whit Lilo as bootloader. By the way, when is the release of 10.1? -- thanks, Gerrit Jan

Sorry if it sounded like I was dishing LILO, that's not what I meant. Guess I should have added a smiley face to that. After thinking about it though and discussing with another user, LILO could have made a difference, but only if it prevented any preloading of files through the boot process. That was where the problem came in, the preloading. Lee

The solved it. There is an update ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/i386/supplementary/KDE/update_for_10.0/base/kdebase3-kdm-3.5.1-33.i586.rpm -- Gerrit Jan
