[opensuse] OpenSuse KDE: Konqueror or Firefox?
Hey everyone, after using Gnome for a very long time, I recently switched to the KDE environment (withhin my general switch to OpenSuse). So which browser should I choose? Konqueror is a native QT app and also integrates nicely with other KDE apps (like KDE Wallet) and furthermore it seems more lightweight than Firefox. On the other side Konqueror has problems with displaying some web sites. So what do you guys think? What are your experiences? greetings, Samir -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Konq is a very nice all purpose network transparent file browser, but I prefer to use Firefox for web browsing, for the compatibility reasons you mentioned. Joe -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Firefox is my general web browser, but Konqueror pops up every now and then when a page doesn't render properly in Firefox. (my local traffic map from the TV station). I also like to use Konqueror when doing web page validation. brian -- Brian Jackson Photo Sports ~ People ~ Events http://www.BrianJacksonPhoto.com -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Why not use both? You'll often find that one or the other is better for certain situations. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Well, with 9.0 -- 9.2, I had so much trouble with Konqueror that I started using Firefox exclusively. Recently I've been using Konqueror more and more because much of what I do makes the split-screen feature really attractive. Also, I've been having much less trouble with Konqueror displaying sites. ...in fact, I can't remember one I've tried recently that gave trouble. But then, most of my browsing is still with Firefox. -- John Perry -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

You are going to get a million opinions, but... ...I find FF to work "better" than Konq for most sites. As an added benefit, you can use it on Wintendo when you must downgrade. (I use XP at work for the most part.) I had tried to make Opera work for me, but find it has little "annoyances" that make it seem difficult. The one thing you'll like about Firefox - coming from Gnome - is that it still uses the GTK file open/save dialogs. I find that irritating but you will probabaly appreciate it. -- kai - theperfectreign@yahoo.com www.perfectreign.com || www.4thedadz.com www.filesite.org || www.donutmonster.com wo ist der ort für den ehrlichsten kuss ich weiss, dass ich ihn für uns finden muss... -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Ah, I thought it can be changed to KDE's chooser.. but it's only the XUL one :-( -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Thank you. That is better. I recall there being a way to run firefox under a .sh script so that it would implement the konqueror native filechooser. I had googled for about an hour a few weeks back and finally gave up. ...ahh, answering my own question. I hadn't googled on "filechooser" but was trying "dialog" or "dialog box". It is amazing what a word can do to you. Here it is... http://kde-apps.org/content/show.php?content=36077 They have a 10.1 rpm, but smart complained that it could't find the public key. I just used checkinstall to create an rpm from source, and installed it. http://www.perfectreign.com/stuff/suse/2007/20070123_firefox_kde.jpg There's a picture of me saving a file. Notice the normal dialog box. w00t! -- kai www.perfectreign.com || www.4thedadz.com www.filesite.org || www.donutmonster.com closing the doors that surround me so no one will ever penetrate complete my retreat just to wait for the day that never comes so i will laugh alone -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Browser A v Browser B arguments are pretty pointless in my opinion. They are both there and they are both free. Use them, then see what is better. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Can you access your SuSE filesystem with Firefox like you can with Konqueror? Greg Wallace -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

FireFox is the way to go, right. FireFox is a web browser - not a file browser, so you cannot manage files on your local computer. FireFox is much more capable than Konq when it comes to extensions. I recommend FireFox for web, for files use Konq. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

You can, sort of, but konq is more elegant and flexible for these things. Joe -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Firefox had over 100 vulnerabilities fixed in the last 2 years. I would not call that secure. Konqueror had 10 fixed (and none as critical).

I used konqueror as main webbrowser and firefox just for the websites that konqueror does not handle (a very small number). Ciao, Marcus -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Konq as much as possible, for its great integration, small footprint. It works with Google Mail, with user agent spoofing, which I regard as the acid test. If it fails, I use File->Open with Firefox. Konqueror is great, but Firefox wins outright IMO because its extensibility. Think CustomizeGoogle (no more ads in google plus a host of other cool features), ErrorZilla, FireBug, Web Developer, Live HTTP Headers, gmail extensions, and of course Adblock Plus. The predecessor of the latter was implemented in Konq though, to be fair. hth, Craig -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
