Start with the Administration guide suggestion on page 267. (Shortly: use files from the /etc/skel directory.)
-- A.M.
The skeleton files where installed during creation of the user. Do I have to reinstall them till it works Windows-like? Seriously, the question is: what lines do I have to append in ~/.bashrc or ~/.profile or whatever other file to restore the bash history function? Thanks, -- Alain Barthélemy cassandre@bartydeux.be http://bartydeux.be Linux User #315631

Configuration files in /etc/skel do not disable the history feature. If you compare them with ~/.bashrc and ~/.profile then you may find the problem. You may also want to check the status of variables described in the section HISTORY in "man bash". -- A.M.

I'll still add something: 1) If I work on a x-term in a window-manager all the instructions I type are well appended in ~/.bash_history and I can recall them 2) If I work in true console-mode, the instructions are not appended in ~/.bash_history. That did not happen in SuSE-8.1 (working now with SuSE-8.3). -- Alain Barthélemy cassandre@bartydeux.be http://www.bartydeux.be Linux User #315631

That did not happen in SuSE-8.1 (working now with SuSE-8.3).
IMHO SuSE-8.3 doesn't exist. The version 8.2 was followed by 9.0. Anyway, the information you provide is not sufficient to suggest a solution. The following is from 9.0. These should be default settings. $ shopt cdable_vars off cdspell off checkhash off checkwinsize on cmdhist on dotglob off execfail off expand_aliases on extglob off histreedit off histappend off histverify off hostcomplete on huponexit off interactive_comments on lithist off login_shell on mailwarn off no_empty_cmd_completion off nocaseglob off nullglob off progcomp on promptvars on restricted_shell off shift_verbose off sourcepath on xpg_echo off $ echo $SHELLOPTS braceexpand:emacs:hashall:histexpand:history:interactive-comments:monitor $ echo $HISTFILE /home/malusek/.bash_history -- A.M.

I have the same settings and still 1) Bash history OK if I work in a x-term (but I don't need to open a window manager to read my mails with an ssh connection) 2) No Bash-history in pure console mode (no graphical environment thus). But I see "histappend off". I'll see how to change that. -- Alain Barthélemy cassandre@bartydeux.be http://www.bartydeux.be Linux User #315631
