Cannot figure out root password..
Between the two of us ... systems administrators some one changed root password and cannot remember it any more. We cannot any do all root duties.. Help! I can this problem be sorted out? Luckson.
First off, find out who changed it and smack them stupid. ;)
Then, you should be able to use CD1 (recovery mode) to boot up and clear the
password for root.

Thank you for your quick response ... If I hard boot my linux box is there a way of interrupting the startup procedure so that i get to the command line and change the passwd? Just thinking ... Luckson.

On LILO prompt boot: type ``linux init=/bin/sh'' (without qoutes, of course) and you'll boot into shell. Then mount your / filesystem, edit /etc/passwd with vi, and there you go... -Kastus
Just thinking ...
Luckson.
Boot your machine with the option 'init=/bin/sh' at the lilo prompt, once you get the shell prompt re-mount the root partition rw, edit the file /etc/shadow and delete the password for root. Re-boot, the root account should now log in without password, change the password with passwd. -- Rafael
