Caution Please do not use ReiserFS together with RAID 5 software. For hardware RAID solutions their are no such limitations. At present a reiserFS partition must at least be 34 MB in size

It's not software based, it's hardware based. I tried on an IBM Raid controller on an IBM Netfinity 5500 Server. At 12:51 AM 8/29/2001 +0200, Jean-Paul Faessen wrote:

hi, what could be the problem of using reiser and software raid5 ??? i mean, there were some issues in the paste concerning the raid code in linux conflicted with reiserfs (the buffers of each conflicted ....) but now it works .... i have it happily running here without any problems .... (raid5 and reiserfs) but if there are issues with raid&reiser (in 7.2) i really wish to know ..... greets, chris Am Mittwoch, 29. August 2001 00:51 schrieb Jean-Paul Faessen:

Not sure that it matters, but I was using 7.1 to install. Also tried Mandrake 8.0 with Reiser. Here is what would happen: 1)I created the array using the IBM software on the hardware level. 2)Reboot and start the Suse install. 3)Choose custom disk partitions and made this configuration: /boot-ext2 swap /usr-Resier /var-Resier /home-Resier About 10 minutes into the install the machine would freeze and not even the ctrl-alt-bkspace would recover the machine. Attempt the install again and use ext2 file system for above config, all was ok. I need smaller file blocks since this machine will be a web server. The default 4k block would chew up the drive with those small php and html files. Just for fun I did try this on all three Netfinity machines and no luck. There are problems after a system crash with kernel 2.2. Not sure about 2.4 - I wonder if the warning was left in the 7.2 manual in error? M

re, last negative result was with suse 6.4 and kernel 2.2 then i updated to 7.2 with kernel 2.4 and thought to myself "eh, the raid code has changed _alot_, try again with reiser" and voila, it worked. even on a production machine (a webserver) i have no troubles. also, the annoying raid-checks (n case of a hard-reboot) are now done in the background, while the raid is active from the very first moment ...... this is great ! i guess it is a combination of the new raid code and jernel 2.4 which makes all this working now ..... btw, it is really handy to have the magic-sys-req key enabled in the kernel (and yast) .... can save alot of fsck's and even reboots (by killing all tasks....) greets, chris Am Mittwoch, 29.
