9.3 is slow :( partial solved
The original complaints were Evolution takes 20 minutes to dl e-mail on a dsl connection. Solution : turn off spam checking. KBearSiteManagerdb always staring up. Konqueror takes 1 minute + to load. Solution : delete ~/.KDE folder and relog-in in KDE. Current state : KDE has been upgraded to 3.4.2 and still tends to be slower than 9.1 using 3.4.1. 2 minutes from start of log-in to usable desktop, apps are slow starting. HD UDMA was checked and turned on for the drive that Linux is on (Windows drive was properly set up ?). Currently using Gnome as GUI, which loads much faster 1/2 to 1/4 of the time it seems. Apps launch faster than KDE, much faster. Firefox - doesn't always load web pages when URL is launched from Evolution. Any thoughts? I'm wondering about uninstalling KDE and reinstalling it, but I want to make sure that every profile gets everything fresh from the re-install, including menu's. Mike

Same complaints. Sine 8.x performance went downhill. I switched to Fedora Core 3 (4 at the moment) and was very surprised by the speed a linux distro *could* have. -- Kind regards P.M. Actually its none of your business... but since you're asking... The list public and not only for the opinions in favour of SuSE.. -- Peter M. Groen Open Systems Development Klipperwerf 12 2317 DZ Leiden T: +31-(0)-71-5216317 M: +31-(0)6-29563390 E: info@osdev.xs4all.nl

Generally speaking, this list is not for non-technical opinions at all, though predictably there's a certain amount of it here. This list is for questions and answers, information, recommendations, etc. It most certainly is not for any old rant on SuSE, disconnected from any intent to improve it for the user or for the user community in general. It's not that you're unwelcome, but one must ask why someone would monitor such a high-volume list that does not pertain to software they are using or are contemplating using and then speak up only to say that the writer is not a member of the SuSE user community because they were unable to get SuSE Linux to meet their expectations.

And my answer wasn't informational? OK. That's a matter of opinion.

OK. I guess the performance issue was discussed earlier (I remember a discussion around 8.3 or somewhere in that timeframe), so why is it still sluggish than? If SuSE tries to win the desktop (As they told during the Linux Expo), I think they should do a better job at the performance. If it's yast or configuration related: fix it. Find a way to get it right instead of relying on fast hardware. If it's codesize or code optimizing related, again: fix it. They have a reputation to keep. (And I haven't even mentioned the fact that I paid around EUR 100,= for each and every version of SuSE )

First of all: What makes you a member... The fact that you have bought version 6.1 to 9.3 and using it or not?.... Tell me. Is there a decoderring involved? Do you "members" have a secret handshake? It's all the same operating system. Gentoo, Fedora, Debian, SuSE, name them all. It's basically the same codebase with some patches and/or added packages... In my opinion a distro-war is totally insane. If you don't like it, switch or build it yourself. I was lazy and switched... As for following lists: Being a Linux developer (Userspace and kernel) since 1993 I'm always interested in the issues that come along in other distro's than my own. I also follow several Redhat related lists (Alpha and Intel), the Kernel mailinglists, KDevelop, KDE-bugs. MICO and Qt-related stuff. The sum of all the problems reported, will lead you to a general problem in the software if all distro's report the same... True? That's why someone is following several lists and occasionally answers a question... Just to service the community by fixing problems in the software... Just for fun, not for the credits.. I don't want to start a fight with anyone and I'm not looking for recognition. I have my opinions and you are entitled to your own. That's the freedom we have to give each other.

This is the entirety of the body of your message on this thread:

I would have to say "no," that is not informational.

That SuSE Linux is sluggish is not a fact, it's your opinion or impression, and is by no means a general problem for users of SuSE Linux.

<STUFF DELETED> I haven't tried RedHat for years and I only tried the first beta of Fedora core on an old slow P-II/333/64M +2M video laptop, so I've only read articles reporting that RedHat outperforms SuSE, but haven't seen any figures. https://www.redhat.com/archives/fedora-list/2004-February/msg03049.html says that Fedora works out the processor and installs accordingly. SuSE ships i586 only for 32-bit and I wonder if that is where the difference lies. My x86_64 XP3000+ laptop running at a slower speed outperforms this XP3000+ 32-bit box on stuff like kernel compiles and I've put that down to optimisation. My gentoo box optimsed for Athlon with a XP2000+ seems snappy enough, perhaps only seems. Regards Sid. -- Sid Boyce ... Actually this list is not for expressing opinions it is for obtaining help for installing and using SuSE. One would wonder why you are still here if for no other purpose than to try and cause problems. If you care to monitor a list and express any opinions you want there is an OT list for that.
