SuSE 9.1 Pro / Proxy Server
Hi All, I'm new to Linux and to this list. I'm sure this has probably been discussed before. First could you tell me what is the easiest way to check past postings. Here is the dilemma I have :- In our office we have 2 connections to the internet. 1 is using SDSL which we use for our web, FTP and email. We also have 1 ADSL connection that we use for surfing only. At the moment I have a SonicWall Pro 100 connected to the ADSL modem, which in turn is connected to a WinXP Pro box running WinGate Proxy server. This box has 2 nics installed. 1 for the LAN and 1 for the WAN which is connected to the SonicWall Pro 100. I would like to replace this WinXP box with a SuSE 9.1 Pro box running a Linux Proxy Server. This box will also have 2 nics installed. 1 for the LAN and 1 for the WAN which is connected to the SonicWall Pro 100 Could you recommend a Linux Proxy Server that someone like me who knows very little about Linux, but I am learning. Could you also give me some pointer on howto install and configure this Proxy Server. I'm confident installing SuSE 9.1 Pro as I have done this lots of time while I've been trying to learn Linux. I also think I'm confident enough to setup the SuSE Firewall with proper routing etc. This Proxy Server doesn't need to have bells and whistles on it. All I need it to do is accept traffic from any PC on our LAN and pass it to the internet etc. All the PC's on the LAN are running W2K Pro. Thanks in advance for your time and help. Martin

If you need something that's really the Rolls Royce and is doing well in Corporate setups, look at http://www.astaro.com, the admin is done simply via any browser connected to the LAN on a designated IP address, so you can restrict access. This is the one I would recommend for the range of features, such as SPAM filtering, virus handling, VPN, online updates, etc. For something simple and very effective, the one I use, then have a look at http://BBIagent.net, admin is done via ant java enabled browser and is simplicity itself to setup, access is password controlled, no need to understand iptables/NAT. There are many more, like shorewall, smoothwall, coyote, IPCop, etc., Regards Sid. -- Sid Boyce .... Hamradio G3VBV and keen Flyer =====LINUX ONLY USED HERE=====

Squid is pretty much THE proxy server. It's got a lot of config options, but out of the box it'll work well, and you can tune it as you go. There are quite a few GUIs that will generate configs, too. If you're new to Linux but know a little about what you're trying to do, you might try to get webmin on the system, too. The firends of mine who have switched over to Linux from windows environments have all said that webmin was a great help to them when learning to configure stuff... Anyway, Squid's well documented and well supported, and it'll be capable when/if you encounter slightly more complicated needs. --Danny
Thanks to everyone that has given me some guidance. I will have a look at the options you have offered and I'm sure 1 of them will be just the thing. Cheers, Martin
