[opensuse] Merging Kopete chat logs
Hi list-mates, I have a question concerning Kopete. I use Kopete both on my laptop and my home PC and have history-saving enabled to read back things I've talked about with clients, colleagues, etc. The problem is that since I use Kopete in both locations, my chat logs are also in two locations. I've looked at the files in question in /home/<user>/.kde/share/apps/kopete/logs/. There are XML files there which have the chat transcripts in them. What I am looking for is the following: Is there a simple way that these logs can be merged, in such a way that I can see all conversations in Kopete's history window? Would rsync be an option? The problem for me is that these files are named as follows: <contactname>200806.xml for someone I have chatted with in June of 2008. A file with the same name exists both on the laptop and on the home PC if I have chatted with that contact on both computers in June (which happens a lot). Ideally, these should also be merged. Any thoughts, anyone? I have never tried it, but altavistaing "kopete log imap" brings up http://im2imap.berlios.de/. I have never tried those scripts but it is pretty much how I would have done it if I ever had the time to set it up. Hi Matthias, Sorry for the late response, I've been away for a few days. Thanks, I tried searching the web before posting to the list, but I never considered using imap for merging chat history. Of course, this would require an IMAP enabled mail server nearby, I suppose. That could probably be arranged, but I'd prefer a more simple way, something like a script or something... GMail offers free IMAP, e.g. Of course that would mean that you trust them with your chatlogs.

Yeah, a plugin for Kopete that automatically up- and downloads to imap at the right-point-in-time(TM) would be prefered by myself, too. If you'll allow me to perform Reanimate Thread... This is part of the long term plan for Kopete in KDE 4: Allow Kopete to log to the Akonadi PIM storage server. Then you can use IMAP backends, local file backends, whatever you like. This is planned for the KDE 4.2 timeframe, together with using Decibel/Telepathy. Allowed, of course.

Thanks Will, that's good to know. I've always found this feature to be missing in Kopete (and most other IM clients, for that matter). Since I use it on several machines (3 at the moment), my logs are scattered and it's hard to keep track of conversations. So I guess KDE 4.2 will be the solution for me. Until then, I am looking into an IMAP server...
