[opensuse] libreoffice base csv import greyed out
Hi I have a csv file which imports fine into calc, but when I open by importing it into base, I cannot edit the resultant db. I cannot add records nor fields. All options are greyed out. I've tried importing it by first saving it as calc and then into base as a spreadsheet but the same result: greyed out everything. I've tried deleting my libreoffice program and other csv files. I've added the libreoffice repo to my 12.3 install and updated but still greyed out. Any ideas anyone? - maybe as root , treat the directory containing relevant files : chown -R user.root ~/files-directory & chmod -R +rwx ~/files-directory ............ best regards

Hi It may be permissions. I have only r (it's a cifs share) on the csv. However even if I download it (it then becomes rw for me) I still get the same greyed out menus. root does not have permission to change the files so I can't try the suggestion. I couldn't find anything that did an import of a CSV to a DB. I saw an option to attach to an existing database, and offered the option of attaching to a spreadsheet, but that option clearly said it would open it READ ONLY. Once it did that, I could use the DB for queries and such but I couldn't change anything. I could close the DB, then update the spread sheet in calc, then re-open the DB and see my changes. Or perhaps I missed an actual IMPORT option? How did you actually do the import? -- Explain again the part about rm -rf / -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

You create a new db and select text > csv and the source.

Yeah, it opens the csv read only. That's what we want. You can edit the resultant spreadsheet though.

Try again, please, that instruction was perfectly opaque.

I can't. The DBs I created from the Attach to spread sheet is locked and can't be edited, not for structure or for content. -- _____________________________________ ---This space for rent--- -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

OK. I worked it out: In base opening screen: What do you want to do? Create new database > Next > Yes, register the database for me > Open the database for editing > Finish open the csv > edit > select all > edit > copy back to base: click Tables > edit > paste (give it a name) choose all the fields > Next > Create > add a key if you don't have one You can now edit everything:) L x -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

You can now edit everything:) L x
Ah, very cool. I never tried the paste option, because the csv was huge. If it was that easy, why haven't the LO guys made that an option after you connect to a csv, to save the content and disconnect from the csv. If they can read it in, they should be able to simulate a copy-paste. -- Sent from my Android phone with K-9 Mail. No matter what the size of the csv, you are pasting into 'nothing'. There is nothing yet on screen to suggest it. It was a student of mine who found it by accident. I only realised what had happened because he had a working import wheras everyone else had read only. I asked him to retrace his steps. Certainly not intuitive. Apart from that, it's just as easy as Access; you can drag and drop whole fields and records from txt and calc files.

There's something similar here: https://help.libreoffice.org/Common/Importing_and_Exporting_Data_in_Base Which introduces the read write confusion you mentioned. HTH L x -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org
